Blinded by Sorrow Review| Posted February 07, 2021 What You Need To Know Defying Death is a hardcore metalcore band from Virginia. They introduced themselves to the music industry by releasing two singles in 2020. In February 2021, the band released their first EP, Blinded By Sorrow. It features an instrumental opening track and five diverse, metal songs.
What It Sounds Like The guitars are dark, intense, and distorted, and the drums are commanding. The vocals are predominately low growls, alongside some sung choruses.
Spiritual Highlights The name and music of Blinded By Sorrow cover the trauma and struggles of life. The lyrics range from mental health, hypocrisy, and more--ultimately through a hopeful perspective driven by Christian faith. The title track, "Blinded by Sorrow," is a prime example of Defying Death's foundation of faith: "If this is the plan you have for me/Then God clean my eyes/So my heart can finally see what it wants to be."
Best Song "Withered Roots" and "Blinded By Sorrow" are the EP's standout songs. It's worth mentioning that every song has a great aspect to it. "Withered Roots" is my go-to heavy song on the album. It has a hopeful and catchy chorus. It also showcases the band's signature heavy sound, accurately. Meanwhile, "Blinded By Sorrow" is especially unique. It's the most melodic song on the EP, by far; it offers a softer side to the music, while it targets anxiety with hope.
Bottom Line Defying Death's debut EP, Blinded By Sorrow, firmly establishes them as a hardcore metal band worth following closely and supporting generously. There is only the occasional vocal that is not as clear and crisp, as the majority. I really appreciate that every song on Blinded by Sorrow offers hope in the midst of a difficult life.
