If you asked Shannon if there was ever a time she could remember when she didn’t love to sit down at the piano and worship the Lord, she would say she doesn’t recall a time. It feels like music and worship have always been a part of her heart and her journey, and for this she is most grateful.
Just prior to Shannon beginning piano lessons, Shannon’s Mom (Barbara) surrendered her life to the Lord and led the rest of the family to Christ. Her Mom and Dad, both musical, put Shannon in piano lessons with their church pianist. God’s faithful hand of providence was at work, indeed.
Most afternoons, beginning around six years of age, you could walk into the living room of Shannon’s house and find her feet dangling off a piano bench. Yes, she was practicing scales, Bach & the classical favorites, but she was also extremely blessed to have a piano teacher who was also a worshipper at heart. Her teacher began to show her how to improvise, play and create by ear and to flow in worship from the very first lesson. They began with the simple song “God Is So Good” and learned it in every style, version and key imaginable, and the rest is history. God was beginning to birth and grow the heart of worshipper in Shannon.
Though Shannon was shy by nature, by the age of 11 she was up front playing piano for her church praise team and writing and singing her first worship songs. Her family also started paying regular visits to a nursing home in their area over dinner hour, singing for the elderly – a precious & most gracious audience. It was Shannon on the piano, her Mom on guitar, and her Dad, brother, Mom and herself on vocals. Through all of these experiences, God was preparing Shannon for what He had in store for her– ministering to the Lord as He saturated thirsty souls with His presence. She continued ministering on her praise team throughout high school until she moved to Texas to attend Christ for the Nations.
Her passion for worship grew as she attended Christ for the Nations and began writing, playing piano and leading worship for their annual worship recordings and morning chapels. As a student, she also traveled several summers with CFNI's 'Living Praise' - a music ministry group - and later went on staff in CFNI's music department, arranging and writing for their recordings and directing their praise band. Shannon's years at CFNI proved to be an environment that would deepen her desire to be used to lead others to worship the Lord through the gift of music. CFNI was also where she met her husband, Mark! After CFNI, they each attended and graduated from Dallas Baptist University as well. They were married in 1993.
Since that time, the Lord has opened the door for Shannon to minister at many churches, women's conferences, and worship events around the world. She has also been a member of the Maranatha! Praise Band and taught as a clinician for their Worship Leader Workshops. She is grateful to have had the chance to write and record three worship albums of her own (“Faithful God,” “Story of My Life,” & “Shades of You”) as well as to have written for and recorded with many other individuals and ministries including: Paul Baloche, Ross Parsley, Jared Andersen, Charles Billingsley, Scott Krippayne, The Desperation Band, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, PBS, Day of Discovery, Lifeway Worship, J. Daniel Smith, Maranatha! Music, Integrity Music, Christ for the Nations, Discovery House Music, RBC Ministries, Word Entertainment, Revive Our Hearts with Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Doxology Records, American Association of Christian Counselors, Kim Hill, Matthew Ward, Sheila Walsh, Women of Joy, the Assemblies of God Missions Department, Mission Network News and others. God has also given her success at inspirational radio through such songs as “Count It All Joy,” “All Your Promises Are True,” “You Are My Refuge,” “In the Waiting,” “From the Rising,” “When I Think About The Lord” and “Jesus, What a Savior.” Her worship songs have been featured many times on Worship Leader Magazine's Song DISCovery – a musical resource for Worship Leaders around the nation.
Shannon, her husband Mark, and their son Christian, make their home in Colorado, along with their cat Sunny, who is more like a dog. With the exception of a few international trips here and there, Shannon ministers a couple weekends a month stateside and in her home church, preserving time for family, friends and songwriting. She is still most at home behind a piano, worshipping the Father, though her feet no longer dangle off the bench
