In one of my favorite recent collaborations, newcomer Christian pop sensation Forrest Frank and R&B artist Tori Kelly deliver a powerful and vulnerable song about honestly crying out to God for help. These lyrics call us to remember two things when facing challenging moments in life.
"Miracle worker, make me new/I know there's nothing You can't do/I don't know who else to run to/Miracle worker, I need a miracle soon."
Talk to God about your emotions.
"Running on empty, at the end of my rope/Never thought I'd be the one losing hope/Put on a smile when I need to be someone else/I'm broken in pieces, lonely inside/But I heard that You save each tear that I cry/I know my help only comes from You."
I have a "fix it" brain. Do you? Here's what I mean. When dealing with a hardship or a problem in life, my first instinct is to try to fix the problem to resolve the issue. Probably because it's easier than having to dig deep and look at my heart; it takes me a while to figure out the emotions I am feeling beneath the surface and to get vulnerable with God and others about how I'm feeling. But when I accept God's invitation to share my honest feelings about what I'm experiencing and my thoughts surrounding those experiences, these moments become some of the most profound times when God ministers to me and deepens my relationship with Him.
When experiencing pain and trials, remember that God cares about the emotions we feel about our life situations. He welcomes us to bring our feelings openly to Him. In the second verse of "Miracle Worker," Tori Kelly sings, "I know that you hold each tear that I cry." That lyric refers to Psalm 56:8 (NLT), which says, "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book."
God sees you and knows what you're going through—every feeling and every experience. He does not overlook anything. When you're overwhelmed, angry, confused, or hurting—whatever it may be—God wants you to tell Him about it, and He wants to comfort you with His truth. We serve a God who cares about what we're going through and our hearts. So, run to God confidently with your emotions.
Ask God for help in your situation.
"Oh, lately I feel like I've been on my own/Walking these streets, but they don't feel like home/Trying to fight it, but I just can't seem to break through/Oh, I need some rest, and I need a way out/I wish I knew what all this was about/All of these questions just lead me straight back to You."
I love this song because it perfectly balances bringing your emotions honestly to God and crying out to Him for help. It sounds like the prayers and songs we find in the book of Psalms in Scripture. And it sounds like the invitation we see in Philippians, which calls us to pray about things in our lives weighing us down, unburdening our hearts to God in prayer and presenting our requests to Him, asking Him to meet our needs.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) says, "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then, you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
God is loving and gentle enough to care for your emotions and strong and powerful enough to intervene in whatever situation you bring before Him. So, as you pour out your heart to Him, ask our miracle-working God to show His power on your behalf. He can heal. He can restore. He can direct. He can give wisdom. He can encourage. He can provide. He can make you new. Everything we need is found in Him.
Final Thoughts
As you listen to "Miracle Worker," consider it a model for talking to God about what's going on in your life and a reminder of all the biblical prayers recorded of God's people doing the same.
