Amazing Full Length Debut| Posted January 16, 2010
Shapes Stars Make is a post rock/ambient rock band out of Dallas, and with "These Mountains Are Safe," they have made a good start for themselves. Their first full release is exactly what good post rock sounds like. Heavy and passionate at points, meandering and thoughtful at others, the band also manages to throw in some more progressive elements that distinguish their work from some of the other post rock bands out there. Lead vocalist Michael Gooden sounds amazing, singing the few lyrics of this album with a quiet reserve, and even perhaps a bit of melancholy underneath. The guitars are amazing, be they the loud fury of "Sunrise" or the silvery flickers of "Fireflies and Lights." The bass guitar is heavy and deep, adding depth to the songs, and the drums are outstanding as well. Overall, a fantastic release. I does lack some polish at points, but the music more than makes up for that.
