Until this EP, Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken had never written songs together before. Ampersand is a short collection of love songs. Most of the tracks reflect a concern for making love and marriage last, most obvious in the second track, "When The Summer's Gone." Since both Webb and McCracken have keen senses for musical allusion, it is not surprising that one track ("If Not For You") is a Bob Dylan cover.
