It’s taken Charlie Peacock 15 years to resume his recording career after a string of production projects with the likes of Switchfoot and The Civil Wars. He reasserts his talents as a singer/songwriter with a vengeance on No Man’s Land, a work steeped in Southern roots music and infused with Christian compassion. Peacock takes listeners on a journey deep into Delta blues country, veering into Cajun territory on the heartfelt “Mystic” and the playful “Ghost of the Kitty Cat.” He taps into Neville Brothers–style funk on “Voice of the Lord” and mixes cabaret suavity with rocker bite on “Deep Inside a Word.” The lyrics are vivid, subtle, and humane, probing a rancorous romance in “Let the Dog Back in the House” and basking in nostalgic vibes on “Satellite.” “Kite in a Tree” and “Only You Can” treat matters of faith with poetic sensitivity. No Man’s Land’s production is superb, filled with buoyant brass, shivery slide guitars, keening pedal steel, and slippery, body-grabbing rhythms. Peacock does it all with a humble spirit and a masterful touch, fusing diverse elements into an inventive, emotionally compelling whole.
