Cornerstone 2010 was my first awareness of Eastern Block. You can hear samples at MySpace, which is always better than a review. A couple of things are worth mentioning:
Musically, they sound MUCH more mature than a first album would indicate. For example, they are comfortable with silences between phrases and experiment with different vocal styles, scat, and group backing. Drums strongly underpin several songs, especially "Fire Away" and "Hector," and it's nice to hear such a solid rhythm section. At times there is a Pink Floyd influence in the Gilmour-esque guitars ("Undercover") though the album is not particularly derivative, just excellent.
Lyrically, you get evocative themes such as, "My first life, rest in peace...." ("The Brave") and "You want this life and I guess you have it then. I come from the future, here to tell you I disapprove." ("Future"). Both ideas are well-worth contemplating.
You may have trouble finding their stuff for sale, but their FaceBook pages says iTunes has both their EP and Past Palace.
Four Stars, and an excellent full-length debut (their next release is due shortly). Watch this band--they've got major talent.
