It’s been five years since they released their critically acclaimed album Forget October and based on my first listen, it was well worth the wait. Anchor Tattoo is the perfect follow up; an album packed with 11 uplifting inspirational tunes. The husband and wife duo of Jen and Rob Slocumb have endured life’s challenges and the lyrics in these new songs reflect where they’re at with love and spirituality.
The second song “Love Revolution" was originally targeted as the title of the album, but changed to Anchor Tattoo for its uniqueness. The pop driven melody is the perfect foundation for the simple and to the point lyrics “Praying for a love revolution/So put your weapons down/This is worth fighting for.” The song builds at the end with Rob backing Jen on vocals, helping drive the message home.
The title track “Anchor Tattoo” is a perfect blend of pop infused with their signature Americana sound that their fans have grown to love. As she sings about a tattoo on her wrist, and yes, she does have one, you’ll find the perfect complement to Jen’s voice when a banjo is added to the mix. On the song “I Will Wait” the sweet, euphony of Jen’s voice leaves you in a state of lullaby. You feel like you’re floating on a cloud as you wait to find “a place where milk and honey overflow.”
A surprise was hearing them cover Jefferson Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” But, after listening to the lyrics I couldn’t think of a better song to represent the duos life together. This is definitely the standout track.
I’m glad to see they gave the song “Red Door” another chance in the studio. This was included on their EP, which was released between Forget October and Anchor Tattoo. The new version is elevated by Jen’s mesmerizing vocals.
Like always, the duo’s songs are an open door into their lives, an invitation to travel with them through life’s journeys. However, this collection of songs puts you in such a beautiful state of mind, I think I’m gonna stop and stay awhile.
