PSA Volume 3 [edit]
by Derek Minor | Genre: Rap/Urban | Release Date: August 14, 2012

In his third installment of the PSA series, Derek Minor (formerly PRo) delivers his finest work yet. Sonically, the project exceeds all expectations of a mixtape. The project’s beats are a breath of fresh air from the monotony of hip-pop that has plagued the industry. Production ranges from soulful blues samples, heavy bass-lines and warm strings to hard hitting 808’s, looming organs, and energetic brass sections. Lyrically, Minor takes the listener on an intense journey through his perspective, struggles, and triumphs. The energy and passion that Minor’s fans are use to reach new levels on this mixtape. Along with impressive lyricism and monster beats, PSA Vol. 3 boasts an impressive arsenal of features including: Sho Baraka, Canon, Lecrae and more.

From start to finish the project keeps the listener’s head nodding and heart moving. The most impressive part of PSA Vol. 3 is the relevance of the project. Derek Minor touches on many interesting topics ranging from drugs, the trap, and grindin’, to marriage, family, and the industry. On the cut “I’m Focused” Minor provides a southern anthem for people out grindin’ . “Sad Condishun” dives into the hardships that people encounter and must overcome in a cold world. Minor gets introspective on the single “Get Up” as he discusses his struggle with making a tangible impact versus lip service. Every track comes with a concept that unfolds over a dope instrumental. A shining example is Minor’s “Riddle Me This” where he gives a first- hand account of how drugs and violence actually affect the hood. The song uncovers the contradictions between what is portrayed on the radio and the reality of drug dealing and use. Minor also uses the song to challenge emcees to be authentic and stop portraying a false persona.

This project proves that you don’t have to choose between lyrical content and quality production. Minor delivers a mixtape that manages to stimulate both the mind and the ears. The artist formerly known as PRo has started the new chapter of his career with a certified banger. PSA Vol. 3 is a must hear and fitting introduction to Derek Minor.
