If you know Morgan Cryar at all, you likely know him by his songs. He says he has people all the time come up after a concert and say with surprise, "I didn't know that song was your song. I love that song." He just smiles and shakes his head.
He's been a national figure in Christian music since his 1984 debut release "Keep No Secrets" on Star Song Records. Since then he has become well-known for his paradox-laden lyric style. Songs like "Strength of the Weak," and "Kingdom Upside Down" flow out of a heart that relishes irony.
"The most ironic story in the world is the Gospel," says Cryar. "A perfectly Holy God comes into mortal flesh to save the very people that would murder Him. Then it turns out that the murder itself was the very event that did the saving! How can you not write about that?!"
Morgan has considerable radio success under his belt with songs like "Holy Fire," "I Get Carried Away," "Voice of Experience," "Pray in the USA," and of course "What Sin?" Yet he has never considered himself a great singer. "I don't consider myself a 'golden throat'," he admits. "But I am a man that has things to say--who says them through songs."
Still his voice has yielded numerous #1 hits on Christian radio including "If I Never See a Miracle," "I Call Him Father," and "Pray in the USA." Also, years after its initial release, "See You On the Other Side" was used in a special multi-media presentation following the tragic Oklahoma City bombing, prompting airplay on mainstream stations around the country.
In the mid-80's, when Morgan began, he was singing to high schoolers and college audiences around the country, opening for groups like DeGarmo and Key, and Petra. Now, as the years have passed, Morgan has grown up, and so has his audience. "The kids I was singing to in the 80's are now grown and starting families," says Cryar. "I did the same and now I sing about what I'm going through as a man trying to be a godly dad."
Speaking of families, Morgan and his wife, Melanie, have 7 children! And speak of families they do! Morgan and Melanie speak at marriage retreats in churches around the nation now also.
Morgan's interests have taken him into several areas of the Christian music field. As a producer, he helps others make the most of their music by turning out great CD's. He is also a studio owner in Nashville, TN. He writes songs for himself and others. And of course, still records, speaks, and performs nationally.
His most recent endeavor is the new Premier Record label, and the Christian Music Workshop series.
As a musician, the dad in him is coming out. "It's time to 'give back' to the next generation of singers and songwriters," he says. "I got my introduction to Christian music through a seminar kind of like this one. There were national artists and speakers and we all met for a few days in the woods of Louisiana (his home state). I made friends that I still keep in touch with today. That's what I want to provide for those who are just getting started."
