Jake Jones and Robert Venable, members of chart-topping hard rock band
As We Ascend, launched the TurnedUp Podcast series earlier this year. This week, their podcast conversation collided with their music making as they discussed the making of their number 1 song "Tell Me."

The weekly TurnedUp podcast is "pulling the curtains back and giving audiences a glance behind the scenes in music and sound," and has gained rapidly growing attention from fans in a short period of time. As of December 7, there have been nearly 20,000 downloads and 103 followers after just 15 episodes. The podcast has frequently held the number 1 spot on iTunes.
Episode 15, "How to Make a #1 Hit Song - Tell Me," features Jake and Robert discussing the process of creating a Billboard-topping song while perhaps bucking some industry trends along the way. In the course of the episode, the duo shares the original voice memo from the shower that laid the groundwork for hit song "Tell Me."
The podcast reveals the struggles along the way from agreeing on the format of the song, being stuck in a studio for weeks, seeking input from
Disciple guitarist Josiah Prince, as well as hearing feedback from As We Ascend "label executives" (the unique approach the band uses to seek input from their supportive fans). For fans of the music industry or As We Ascend, this is a must-hear episode that peels back the curtain on the process-- good and bad-- of what goes into creating music.
