A meme comparing presidential hopeful Ted Cruz to Stryper frontman Michael Sweet went viral over the last few days, causing widespread internet discussion and becoming a number one trending item on facebook.
The original meme was shared in a facebook post on March 11 by author Michael Boulerice, who said "I'm not saying Ted Cruz might be the lead singer of Stryper. I'm saying he's DEFINITELY the lead singer of Stryper."
The meme quickly took off, leading to widespread discussion from Christian music fans and politics followers alike. Michael Sweet was quick to get in on the action with some good humored tweets. "So I guess my doppelgänger is @tedcruz? Guess I better cancel the @Stryper tour so I can focus on my campaign ;-)" the legendary vocalist tweeted on March 13.
As the story continued to grow and reached number one trending status on facebook on March 17, major outlets like CNN and Billboard.com picked the story up. Billbopard asked for an official statement from Sweet. "The whole Michael Sweet/Ted Cruz comparison came as a surprise," the artist shared. "I don't see any resemblance but I'm certainly laughing at the whole thing going public and being the #1 trending story on Facebook! I do hope Ted is a Stryper fan and that he comes out to a show this year on tour. Maybe I'll have him up for a song so we can put this whole thing to rest."
