Corporate Worship Meets Synth-Pop

What You Need to Know
Gas Street Music is the worship expression of Gas Street Church in Birmingham, UK. The collective features worship leaders and songwriters such as musician Tim Hughes, duo Luke + Anna Hellebronth, as well as artists Nick Herbert, Michael Shannon, and Millie Tilby, some of whom are notable solo artists in their own right. Inspired by The Message paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 6 and imagery in the agricultural process of rewilding, the Rewilding EP aims to bring us back to the wide-open space of raw, unhindered worship.

What It Sounds Like
Rewilding feels like corporate worship meets synth-pop vibes. Electric sounds are supplemented by live instruments. Percussive beats grab your attention and get you moving. Rewilding definitely doesn't fit into a box; it could be the soundtrack to your daily activities in life. You can sing the album's songs at a church service as well. It showcases the creativity of the artists ("By The Grace of God, "Rule and Reign").

The album opens strong with "Love Won't Stop," the rim shots in the drums and bass rhythms draw you in from the very first beat. The lyrics are impressively rich in theology as well, while still being accessible and singable. "Way Maker" worship leader and songwriter, Leeland, is featured on "Yours."

Spiritual/Lyrical Highlights
The bridge of "Love Won't Stop" reminds me of Psalm 103. Michael Shannon sings lyrics thanking God for the many ways we see His love and His work demonstrated in our lives: Thank You for the heavens that are open wide/Thank You for the river that will not run dry/Thank You for the blessing that is over my life/Over my life, over my life/Thank You that/You're faithful in the mystery/Thank You that You're working when I cannot see/Thank You that Your love has got a hold on me

Best Song
"Praise to You Alone" is my favorite song on the record. Millie Tilby's soaring vocals on the song are beautiful and bring the song to life. In my opinion, it's also the best example of that "corporate worship meets synth-pop" sound I mentioned earlier. The song is an offering of praise to Jesus for His death and resurrection that saved us from sin.

Final Word
With Rewilding, Gas Street Music has not only captured the sound of their church. But, in doing so, they've also made space for you and me to enter a new place of freedom in worship. This creative project is one you'll want to add to your playlists.
