Hollyn Says Bye to Depression

What You Need To Know:
Twenty-two-year-old Holly Miller (Hollyn) knows what it's like to go through depression and anxiety, especially after a breakup. That's the reason for her new EP, bye, sad girl. This new six song project is Hollyn's way of saying 'bye' to the depression that took over her life after breaking up with her boyfriend.

What it Sounds Like:
This EP is different from anything else I've heard in the CCM world, but is also some of the best songs I've heard from Hollyn. These songs have a great sound, and although this is more of a mainstream release, all of these could reach people that are going through things that have left them broken. Each song tells the story of the highs and lows that happen when we break up with something (or someone) that has been tearing us down. The first track, "i feel bad for you," has a fun EDM vibe to it, and speaks of how once we get rid of the things that are tearing us down in life, it will, in the end, bring us higher than we were when we were clinging to whatever was breaking us.

Spiritual Highlights:
The verse that comes to mind listening to this EP is 1 Corinthians 15:33, which says "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company ruins good morals.'" It's easy to be deceived in bad relationships, thinking that we can fix the person with our good morals. But it turns out, they'll ruin us. Verse one of the song "isn't it harmless?" sings, "Back to the place, I go back to the place / where you told me you loved me / said I was queen of your world, yeah / I thought we were somethin', somethin' / you gave me shelter / you gave me room for my imagination / you expect me to believe it was all an illusion / it's you you're confusin' / it's you you're confusin." We can easily go back to the times we were told we were loved and safe by the person that's hurting us and think we can work the relationship out, but it turns out we just need to cut it out in our lives. "i don't think we can be friends" speaks of this same theme.

Best Song on the Record:
My favorite song on this EP would have to be "i feel bad for you." It's definitely a fun song with the pop sound that Hollyn brings with all of her albums. Although it's hard to choose a favorite, "i feel bad for you" is one that stands out for me!

For Fans Of:
Britt Nicole, TobyMac, Lauren Daigle

Final Word:
This new EP is one that I think we've needed in the Christian music genre for a long time. It's a relatable topic for many people, and I'm sure it will have the power to reach listeners in all walks of life. If you're going through a situation - whether it be a breakup that led you down into depression and anxiety like it did for Hollyn, or you're fighting your own insecurities - this album is one to listen to. It's time to say "bye" to what's breaking you inside.
