Matt Sassano returns May 16 with "My Armor," a new single produced by Josiah Prince of Disciple. Gritty, anthemic, and emotionally loaded, the track is part battle cry, part thank-you letter--for anyone who's ever had someone carry them through the chaos.
The single follows a string of number-one Christian rock hits for Sassano, including "Fuel," "Dear God," and "Not My Name." With "My Armor," he continues his trademark blend of vulnerability and edge--this time with a message that shifts the spotlight from pain to the people who stood through it with you.
Built on thick guitars and anthemic energy, "My Armor" delivers the emotional weight of a song that's lived through something real. It blends the bold, explosive power of Skillet with the raw honesty of early Linkin Park--creating a space that's as defiant as it is vulnerable. But even more than that, the song leaves room for your story too.
At the heart of the song is someone who never left: his mother, Janelle Lynn Cox. When doctors said he might not survive birth due to complications that would later be diagnosed as cerebral palsy, she believed. When educators told him he wasn't normal--that he didn't belong--she stood up for him. When depression and self-harm dragged him into psychiatric wards, she showed up. "My Armor" plays like a highlight reel of those moments--a tribute to the quiet, steady strength that helped him keep going when he had nothing left.
"You've walked with me through fire / and every time the storms are closing in / you stand beside me, we face the lightning."
"There were moments I didn't know what was real anymore--mentally, spiritually, emotionally," Sassano shares. "But my mom never left. Her prayers and her love kept me going."
Sassano didn't just write "My Armor"--he shaped it to reflect a shared fight. "The armor protects you--and it goes into the battle with you," he says. "It endures the blows. That's what this song is about. It's not just my story--it's ours."
To mark the release, Sassano asked fans to send in photos of the people who've been their armor--the ones who stood in the gap when everything else gave out. Those faces will appear in a powerful tribute video dropping May 23.
"If 'My Armor' makes you think of someone who stood by you--through the chaos, the breakdowns, the stuff nobody else saw--I hope you take a second to let that hit," Sassano says. "Call them. Text them. Let them know what they mean. And if they've already passed on... remember what they meant. Think about how far you've come because they were in your corner. Either way, don't let that moment slip by."
"My Armor" will be available on all major streaming platforms May 16.
