Kevin Max, best known for being one-third of the award-winning pop cross-over group DC Talk who went on to sell nearly 9 Million records, has come full circle with his upcoming November 20, 2020 release, Revisiting The Planet. NewReleaseToday is premiering "The Outlaw" today from the new album.
"I started including Larry Norman’s 'The Outlaw' in my live shows around the mid 2000’s," Kevin Max says of the new cover. "Along with David Bowie’s 'Heroes' and John Lennon’s 'Oh My Love,' it became a staple in the setlist. I guess I have always understood the song on many different levels, and I consider it one of the most interesting folk song depictions of Christ. When I recorded it for Revisiting This Planet, John Painter and I decided to give it a bit of a western feel with the shuffle drums but also introduced a psychedelic background vocal approach, giving it that extra Hippie stamp of authenticity to the time period."
Larry Norman’s 1972 pioneering album Only Visiting This Planet was the first of its kind. It was hailed as the first ‘Jesus-Rock’ album and was added to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. This paved the road for artists in the rock and Christian Music genre. Enter Kevin Max.
In the mid-1990s, Max toured with Norman and covered his songs on the road with his band DC Talk. Norman and Max struck up a friendship, which led Norman appearing on Max’s first solo album, Stereotype B. After Larry’s passing, Kevin decided to re-create the whole album, Only Visiting This Planet, but was sidetracked by other projects. Years later after a kismet meet, Kevin met Larry’s son, Mike Norman, at a show in Portland Oregon, which was when Kevin was convinced to finish work on Revisiting This Planet.
