NewReleaseToday is premiering the new lyric video from The Gray Havens for "Rest," the first new original music from the husband and wife duo since October 2018. You can watch it below.
"In the fall of 2019, we were living with some friends," explains Dave Radford. "The life of a full-time musician doesn't allow for a lot of weekly rhythms. You're gone a lot, and you're back home for just long enough to get unpacked before you're gone again. We were looking for a place to live, touring a lot, I had committed to too many things, and was waking up every day in a sort of panic about all I needed to do."
"Around this time, I was introduced to the Bible Project podcast and they had just started a series on the Sabbath. I ended up finishing the podcast while we were driving through the Colorado mountains this past February. I was starring out into what seemed like endless, undisturbed, quiet and listening to the Old Testament story about what God had set up as the Eden ideal, how it had all gone wrong, how important the number seven was to fullness and completeness, and what God's plan was to bring it back one day in Jesus."
"One of the take-homes was: Taking a day to enjoy God's good works, and living like the ultimate rest, or the new Eden, has already come is a good 'rhythm of resistance' to practice in a culture that largely demands unending work with no real rest. The real work, the work God sent Jesus to do on our behalf, is already done. It's finished, and we can rest in that."
"This feels really connected to everything going on in the world right now. With so much fear, chaos, and uncertainty, having this rhythm is powerful: a day when you're acting out more fully what is true all of the time, which is that I have very little control over what happens to us in the future, God is good, and he will give us everything that is needful, even if we press pause from everything else for a day."
