Urban artist HillaryJane sparked a minor controversy when she posted on social media that she had named her brand-new, matte black Martin guitar “Maleficent.”
Although more than 500 people liked her photo on Facebook, a number of comments questioned the choice of the name, which was modeled after the chief villain in Sleeping Beauty (as well as the complicated protagonist in the recent Angelina Jolie film Maleficent).
Many said it was glorifying an “evil” character that has “Luciferian” connotations, and noted that the name itself means “evil activity.”
“In the new Disney movie Maleficent (with Angelina Jolie) I am absolutely in love with the storyline! Let's focus in on my favorite character Maleficent—she's beautiful and powerful...and evil. Right? Or is she?
“Long story short her heart is hard and as she watches the lovely princess grow in grace and beauty it begins to melt. Little acts of kindness start to show. The princess loves Maleficent despite her distance and cold manner.
“In the end, Maleficent's heart is melted by the Princess Aurora’s love towards her and she is a kind, beautiful fairy again. If that isn't a small picture of our evil nature and God’s good gospel then [I don’t know] what is…”
She said it was “obviously not spot on Gospel mirroring, but you get the picture.”
