"Letting Go of Perfect" is more than the title of a record. For Karyn Williams, it's the story of her life. Raised in a high profile professional sports family with 18 brothers and sisters (14 adopted), she learned to push for perfection in everything she did; whether in competing in her childhood passion, gymnastics, taking First Runner Up in the Miss Florida pageant, or finishing any of the 9 marathons she has completed, striving for perfection just seems to be in her blood. But she found the freedom to let go of some of that in the making of this new record, and during the process she has realized God's love and acceptance of her is not based on her performance, but on His grace and mercy, and that shines through in every song on "Letting Go of Perfect".
With a sincere passion in her vocals and a new depth in her songwriting, Williams' sophomore album is primed to deliver a musical peek into her journey. Released October 20th, 2015, the 10-song collection features original compositions co-written by Williams and generated interest from multiple producers who handled the production: Pete Stewart (Toby Mac, Sanctus Real, Newsboys), Brian Bunn (Third Day), up-and-comer Evan Sieling, as well as her husband Brian White (14 number one songs). "Letting Go of Perfect" is released in conjunction with the "Focus on the Funny" fall tour with Christian comedian Chonda Pierce.
"I realize there's a lot of music out there that people can choose to listen to. My prayer with this new record is that I'm not just adding to the noise in the world, but that I'm adding to the message of hope. I have a burden for the 'weight of perfection' we all tend to carry around with us every day, and the songs on this record have been my journey of understanding that the Lord doesn't love me because of anything I accomplish; He loves me because I'm His child. I'm becoming more and more aware of how God works through my imperfections and how freeing it is to be able to laugh and not take myself too seriously," said Williams.
In true Karyn Williams fashion, she allowed herself to be pushed outside the box on this new release, yet fans will still recognize the signature sound they have to come to love in her music. The project's first single, "You Are My Rest" is currently going for adds at radio. All of the songs on "Letting Go of Perfect" are a hopeful and introspective collection; from the celebratory opener "Running To The Sea," to the ukulele driven "Who Says" (Williams played the ukulele,) to the tender ballad "God of All Comfort," to the powerful worship of "Nothing Less (Great Is Thy Faithfulness)"; the album is full of lyrical authenticity and honest encouragement.
An album release party was thrown to celebrate "Letting Go of Perfect" last week. Many friends, family, fellow hit songwriters, album co-writers, and producers including Pete Stewart and Brian Bunn were in attendance. Williams played a few songs off the album and talked about the inspiration behind the music.
Williams recently appeared as a guest vocalist on Third Day's new Soul On Fire record, on a duet with Mac Powell. She also recently wrapped shooting her first full length film "The Power of the Air" which releases in 2016.
