Don’t try to pick only one word to describe David Teems. The multi-talented Georgia native is just as comfortable writing historical or Christian life narrative as he is writing a lyric in 4/4. Poignant ballads or penetrating and witty prose, David is a master of the language, expressing himself through a lyric one day, soul-piercing adjectives and lively verbs another.
Teems is an author and musician who lives with his wife, Benita, in Franklin, Tenn. The couple has two sons, Shad and Adam. Adam and his wife, Katie, have three children – Julian, Evie and Audrey Gray. Shad and his wife, Robin, just had their first child, Killian David, August 17, 2017 at 10:17AM. Both sons and their families live in Franklin.
Teems grew up in Atlanta, where he received a B.A. in Psychology from Georgia State University. He attended graduate school at GSU with the intention of becoming a clinical psychologist. After one semester of graduate school, David abandoned the academic life to pursue music full-time.
To-date, Teems has recorded eight albums, four of which might be described as therapy for the soul, with comforting voiceover reading of Scripture to music. In these titles—HOPE, MORE HOPE, and SPEAK TO ME—he sought the poetry in scripture, where the resonance between pain and redemption are the strongest. He recorded IN THE MOURNING in a similar manner, for those who grieve, those who have loved enough in this life to hurt for it. It became clear to Teems a few years back that his desire to counsel and to help people found a vent through his music. And his books.
While Teems followed one muse to a career in music, he discovered another muse calling him to be an author. His first book, TO LOVE IS CHRIST, a daily devotional, was released in 2005 by Thomas Nelson Publishers.
He followed TO LOVE IS CHRIST with AND THEREBY HANGS A TALE: What I Really Learned About The Devoted Life I Learned From My Dogs [Harvest House Publishers, 2010], a beloved and personal tribute to man’s best friend, a book that has already seen its second edition. That same year, MAJESTIE: The King Behind The King James Bible [Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2010] was published, a biography of James Stuart, who is known either lovingly or indifferently as King James. MAJESTIE was the centerpiece of Thomas Nelson's recent 400th anniversary celebration of the release of the King James Bible, 1611-2011. The biography has earned accolades from reviewers, including Publishers Weekly, who calls it "...a delightful read in every way" and 100 Huntley Street host Jim Cantelon saying MAJESTIE is “...one of the best written books I've ever read."
Teems also is the author of DISCOVERING YOUR SPIRITUAL CENTER: The Power Of Psalm 119, [Leafwood Publishers—Abilene Christian University Press, 2011], and TYNDALE: The Man Who Gave God An English Voice [Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2012], a biography of English Bible translator and martyr, William Tyndale. Like David’s Majestie bio, Tyndale has garnered praise from many, including gospel music icon Gloria Gaither. "From the time we first met David Teems, I have loved this man's heart, mind and writing," Gaither says in her review. "I have followed the trail, both of his words to music and also his poetry and prose — the depth of his soul, the sharpness of his insights and the breadth of his subject matter. These, added to the tender compassion and sensitivity of his art, have culminated in the carefully researched and beautifully written TYNDALE: The Man Who Gave God An English Voice." [In its 2nd edition]
In April 2017, Teems appeared on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS new series, ORIGINS. The episode he appeared in is called THE WRITING ON THE WALL: THE DEATH OF A HERETIC. He spoke on the life, contribution, and martyrdom of William Tyndale.
Teems was a contributor for THE GAITHER HOMECOMING BIBLE, a Bible designed and edited by Bill and Gloria Gaither and released through Thomas Nelson’s Bible division, Fall 2012. The Bible incorporates hymns and devotionals from the iconic gospel music family and their friends. His devotions include PSALM 131, THESSALONIANS 5:17 and HEBREWS 12:2. He also contributed an article (with recipe) in THE HOMECOMING COOKBOOK with Gloria Gaither.
Now, through Abingdon Press [Nashville], celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, Teems has released GODSPEED: Voices of the Reformation, his latest book. GODSPEED features the principal voices of the Reformation, including Martin Luther, William Tyndale, John Calvin, and a host of others. Because the reformer purchased his or her words and opinion at an unbelievable cost, they possessed a clarity often absent in fairer times. Their voices speak clear and sober to a generation not so far removed from theirs, that needs their encouragement and instruction. GODSPEED publishing date: Tuesday, October 3, 2017.
Finding just one word to describe Teems is difficult; finding many ways to enjoy his talent is not. Whether reading one of Teems’ books, listening to his music, or watching him onstage, the experience is life-altering and unforgettable.
