They Had Us At Hello

Years ago, multiple time Battle of the Bands winners We Are Leo caught the attention of Ben Kasica (formerly of Skillet, now a producer), who says he was automatically a fan. In 2011 the group released their first album, Hello, and I guess you could say they've had us ever since. After touring with the likes of Skillet, Family Force 5 and House of Heros, We Are Leo has quite the impressive track record. Fans may relate their sound to that of Owl City or the lyricism of Switchfoot, both of which are huge compliments.
David Duffield, the band's frontman, explains the mission of their ministry: "I want to make music that grabs people's attention." They seem to have accomplished that goal with their Dream Records debut Fightback Soundtrack, a synth pop record sure to keep you intrigued as to what's next from these guys.
Beginning the album with their signature vibrant sound, "Yours4Sure" speaks of their loyalty to God for life. "Phoenix" is an anthem, proclaiming the motivational words "I will rise when the world is burning down around me," much like the title track encourages listeners to never give up or stop believing. "Epic" brings a dubstep/techno vibe, a sound that's constant through much of the album. Songs like "Diamonds In The Dark" and "Fire Inside You" center on Christ being the light in the darkness and allowing Him to shine through us.
The topic of letting go of the past and clinging to God's new mercies is presented in "Yesterday's Gone," and radio single "You're The Best Thing" boasts thankfulness for the relationship we have with our Father. Coming over to the worshipful side of things, "Northern Lights" is a love song of sorts to God and "Until Forever" ends the record nicely with lyrics of praise.
Closing Thoughts:
Fightback Soundtrack seems to have an evolved, more mature sound than the band's previous release. Bolder melodies, stronger lyrics and loads of energy are just a few things that make this album such a success. We Are Leo fans should be proud, seeing as the project was completely funded through Kickstarter and overwhelming fan support. It's been a three year wait to hear new music from the guys, but it proves to be well worth it.
While it's true they had us at Hello, Fightback is a sure sign that they don't plan to stop there.
