Rapper Steven Malcolm may be a new face on the Christian music scene, but he's come with fire through his passion and his beats. After a successful debut with his self-titled album Steven Malcolm, he is back with an EP that delves into his heritage. The Second City - Part 1, an ode to his father's birthplace in Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a powerful reminder that no matter your beginning, God gives new endings.

What It Sounds Like:
This is refreshing honesty and storytelling wrapped into a four-song trap EP. Starting off with a mellow but meaningful intro, Steven continues by taking us down a journey of his life. From his humble beginnings to dancing on Jerusalem streets, you can hear his emotions in a tangible way. He finishes strong with "Fadeaway," a repetitive song based on the basketball term. Strong snare/hi-hat influence and even acoustic guitar mix into a strong base for his rap to take place.

Spiritual Highlights:
The Second City - Part 1 focuses heavily on how our heritage doesn't have to be our story because of Jesus. Although his father was arrested and deported when Steven was just 10 years old, God has continued to provide Malcolm a life full of hope and opportunity. He sets the tone for the EP with "Not To Us/Good Love" (feat. Taylor Hill and Anderson Micheal), a song glorifying God for his success.

Best Song on the Record:
"Watch" is a brutally honest take on the life of Steven Malcolm. In an age where transparency is a quality hardly found in show business, it amazes me that Malcolm delved so deep and proudly broadcasts his story. "I'm really big on that [honesty]. I accept that I'm broken, and that's why I follow Jesus," Malcolm told me when I spoke to him about the song. Not only does "Watch" have a great message, but it's also extremely catchy.

Final Word:
Malcolm delivers an EP that fans can be proud to blast in the car and have fun, with while also learning from his story. Projects like The Second City are exactly what Christian rap needs right now.
