Kathleen O' Malley

By BlackLeopard,

Kathleen O’Malley has a hard life working as a hawker (she sells bread on the streets) and living on the streets of London. The worst part is trying to live with her demanding and rude stepmother which everyone calls “Madam”. Madam is married to Kathleen’s father who is Irish and of course Kathleen is also Irish. Madam has three children and well she just doesn’t see her stepdaughter Kathleen as her own. Kathleen is like a servant in her own home and what’s worse is she has a slight limp that makes it harder to work. Kathleen is constantly worried about her limp and thinks no man could ever want her because of it. Madam makes sure to tell her that and other rude things about her limp.

One day, Kathleen sees an ad on a piece of paper while walking the streets of London.
She couldn’t believe it – the ad says that men in America are looking for women to come over and be their brides. Kathleen thinks it’s ridiculous at first and walks away, but then it’s all that Kathleen can think about. Not too long after she first saw the ad, her father passes away and Madam doesn’t know what to do. Kathleen continues to work on the streets and tries to support her family. After a short while, Madam meets a man and decides to marry him in order to help the family. The only thing is Madam doesn’t want the man to meet Kathleen because she’s embarrassed about her limp. So Madam gives her two choices: either come to the country where they will live and become a servant or stay on the streets and work as a hawker. Kathleen decides to do neither of these choices; instead she makes the bold decision to become a wife of a total stranger….

This is a really good book by Janette Oke and is well written. It might not be the most exciting book that she’s written but it’s good all the same. This is the seventh book in the series - Women of the West. I enjoy this series probably the most of her other series out there.
