dc Talk's
Facebook account posted a
picture on May 3 simply of the stylized word "2017." While nothing else was posted along with the picture, coming from the verified account and being "liked" by Kevin Max lead to immediate and passionate fan speculation as to what this could mean.
The band recognized as one of Christian music's most successful and pioneering acts, who dominated the industry during the 1990s, went on an indefinite "intermission" in the early 2000s in order for the members (Toby McKeehan,
Michael Tait and
Kevin Max) to focus on solo ventures. Toby in particular found immense commercial success under the stagename of
TobyMac, while Max and Tait secured modest success in their own solo ventures. Tait made a comeback in the late 2000s by joining fellow classic act the
Newsboys, replacing departing vocalist Peter Furler. Tait ushered in a new sound and rejuvenated success for the band, fueled largely by the name recognition from his time in dc Talk. The band even recorded a cover of dc Talk signature hit "Jesus Freak" on their first album with Tait.
Fans have been calling for an official reunion of some sorts since the band's intermission began, but have been largely left unfulfilled. A few collaborations on the solo projects gave a small consolation, one on Kevin Max's 2007 release
The Blood and another just last year on TobyMac's new album
This is Not A Test with the song "Love Feels Like."
What this ominous announcement means has yet to be determined. Is it a full-blown reunion? A one-off show? A tour of the solo acts? A new album? Some combination of the above? Or it could be something else entirely, perhaps even something less extravagant than fans may be imagining right now. One thing is for sure: the official accounts being the source of this undoubtedly lend credence to the idea of this being something more official. Fans will have to stayed tuned in the coming days, weeks and months until more information is announced and clarified as to just what this cryptic leak of information may mean.
UPDATE: dc Talk shared a post to their
official instagram the day after posting the initial image, offering simply the date and time May 11, 12:00 p.m. EST. Chances are more answers will be made available then. Stay tuned!
