Make no mistake, Awake did not disappoint in its delivery and is one of the best releases of the year, but for anyone that lived and breathed their last album, Comatose, which took the Christian rock world by storm three years ago, it felt more like Comatose: Part II than the album we were all waiting for.
So here, we get the hard-hitting, rock orchestra songs that trade male and female leads ("Hero," "Awake And Alive," "Forgiven"), the grunge anthems ("Monster," "It's Not Me It's You," "Sometimes") and the power ballads ("Don't Wake Me," "One Day Too Late,"...
THEY'RE BACK....
From the get-go, it's clear that Skillet didn't reinvent themselves like they've done on albums past. The cover art alone having the same logo tells us that. But that is understandable. Comatose worked, and it got them to reach a lot of people. They'd be fools to deviate too much from that style, and thus, they didn't.
But fear not, this is not Comatose II. It's Awake. Opening rocker hero and the title track are arguably VERY Comatose-esque, almost to the point where you wonder during which session they were recorded.(Not that it matters One Day Too Late is also arguably a Comatose-esque song.

And better than ever! It's been almost 3 whole years since the last full length Skillet album, Comatose, which not only took a great band and made them even greater, but it took a popular band and made them even more popular. Continuing that trend, Awake is arguably their best effort yet and is sure to get them even more attention.

"Don't Wake Me" is also a good song, although not as memorable as the three previously mentioned songs.
"Should've When You Could've" is arguably the weakest track on the album. Yet it's so catchy, that you really want to like it, and looking deeper into the song, it's fairly easy to like it.
Ultimately, Skillet has another winner here that is sure to please the wide audience. Those hoping for them to rehash Collide or another earlier album will be disappointed, as will those hoping for Skillet to again reinvent themselves(why they aren't allowed to stick with a winning formula, I don't know). The lyric writing is top-notch, and the music is epic. Awake proves to be one of the best albums of the year and a highlight of Skillet's discography.

Skillet "Awake" Album Review
Following Hero is a song called “Monster”. I know it sounds like a weird name for a Christian song, but the meaning behind it is pretty interesting. The “monster” referred to in the song represents the different and sinful beast inside of us. It talks about how we as humans do everything possible to keep others from seeing the beast from within and how sin is something that we can’t control. The main melody is very catchy. My only criticism of it is that after a while, it got a little repetitive. Other than that it’s an awesome song.

The first song on Awake is a song called “Hero” which was also the first single. This is a really good song, but the real highlight is the backing vocals of the new 20 year old drummer, Jen Ledger. The combination of the rougher voice of the lead singer John Cooper and the voice Jen Ledger, makes this song sound amazing. This song talks about mankind’s need for a hero, in this case that hero being Jesus Christ. The song was written in the midst of all the evil and tragedies that happen in the world today and highlights the fact that Jesus is the one who fights all this evil for us. Hero gets the album off to a hard edgy beginning.

These two songs are great, but the real standout on this album is the title track “Awake and Alive”. I just love everything about this song. It opens up with the trademark of all Skillet songs, the violin. The violins then continue throughout the whole song, creating a great rock atmosphere. It’s also got an amazing guitar solo and it’s a fantastic hard rock tune. This is one of my favourite songs on the album. I just love the triumphant anthem “I’m awake, I’m alive”. This song was an instant hit for me as soon as I heard it. Check it out, “Awake and Alive”.
On a whole, Skillet’s Awake is a fantastic rock album. The album covers a lot of topics in today’s world such as sin, faith and even love. This album is great with the introduction of Jen Ledger and her great voice. She is probably the best female vocalist the band’s ever had.
For a huge fan of Skillet, this probably wasn’t your favourite album because it didn’t offer much new sound. For long fans of Skillet you’d probably think that this album wasn’t as good as Comatose.

I always liked how Skillet diversified their sound album to album and always made the wait between albums worthwhile with something new.

"One Day Too Late" slows things down again, this song I found didn't differ enough in my opinion from other softer songs from Skillet, but has a decent message about taking the time to live out each day to the fullest.
"It's Not Me It's You" opens with a distorted riff, I don't know what it is with this song but it just gets stuck in your head and is rather catchy and fun to rock to.
"Should've When You Could've" I think shouldn't have been on the album, it's ok but it just seems to cheesy to everything else on the album.
"Believe" opens with just acoustic guitar playing and is a nice power ballad. John's powerful vocals fit with this song perfectly and was power ballad that was executed very well and sported some great lyrics.
"Forgiven" I thought was just another decent song, the most open Christian lyrics I think they had on the album. But offers a strong message of the forgiveness offered to us from Christ. It opens with a cook keys intro and then jumps into a mid-tempo rocker.
"Sometimes" one of the best rock songs on the album and possibly the best song on the album has a darker tone to it. But I like how Skillet is just honest about how things can be in life and how everything isn't perfect. Has a cool short little guitar solo that sets this song apart from others on the album.
"Never Surrender" not bad but nothing great either. Typical mid-tempo rock song, but good message about encouraging too never surrender to the things that get us down and to find that strength in Christ.
"Lucy" This is another very powerful power ballad and offers some of the best vocals from John. They are just so honest and heartfelt and is just a touching song. One of the best on the album.
So overall the album is good for what it is and is an enjoyable release by Skillet. Just not one of their best. Too many of the songs blended together on this album and Skillet just didn't rock out as much as they use too on this one. It has a lot more of a radio-rcok feel to it. But it is a well done rock album and worth picking up, since their are several highlights through the album.
Skillet Scores!
Skillet's most recent album, Awake, is the best! On past albums, there has not been a female voice, which is present on most of the songs on Awake. I think this is definitely a plus-it adds a new edge to Skillet's music. I honestly can say that there are no cons at all on this album. One track in particular, Lucy, is a tearjerker. It is a nostalgic song, and it is one of my personal favorites. Some of my other favorites are Hero, and Awake and Alive. As I love this album, I think that others who are die hard Skillet fans like me will also enjoy this too, and that the songs will be stuck in their heads. :)
Different
I must admit that it's WAY different for Skillet but it is also a good change for skillet too. Monster is a song that my little siblings enjoy and even my parents enjoy it. So its the type of rock that anyone can like

3 years after the best album of their careers, Skillet returns with the "sequel" entitled Awake. Why do I call it a sequel? Because both albums have the same sound to them. The messages from both albums are opposites of each other. Comatose was about how we appear to be sleeping when the world needs help. Awake tells the opposite, we need to wake up and take charge of what we need to do to help the world. Awake is basically Comatose part 2 in every way shape and form.

This was the first Skillet I've ever bought, and it was totally worth the money! This cd has some great songs that I just can't stop listening to. If you love rock, you will love this cd!
Too Slow
Skillet is undoubtly a great band.
But Awake has too much ballads: Don't Wake Me, One Day Too Late,Should've when you could've and Lucy. And there are songs without the rock-edge: Believe, Forgiven and Never Surrender.
So it could be a rocker album as Collide or Comatose.
But what's most exciting about the album are the new vocals from Jen Ledger! Her voice is very beautiful and this girl has big skills.
Christian Music Is Finally Awake!
The beginning track, "Hero", shoots the CD off with a hip-hopish sound to it with fast, almost rappy vocals, but with chugging guitars and frantic drums. Their second track and also second single, "Monster", is definitely their darker song on the album but also gives people a chance to look inside of themselves and see the monster that they want gone in their life. It is also one of the hardest songs they have ever made, which may turn some people off to it.
"Don't Wake Me" brightens up the disc with a lovely power ballad which talks about the times when love really hurts...
Skillet's latest album, "Awake", packs the punch of 1,000 freight trains and yet also beholds the beauty of incredible CCM music at it's best! Along with this CD being the most anticipated album of their entire career, their fanbase, Panheads, has had a major increase in members. The CD itself has crisp, intense instruments along with the soaring, snarling voice of frontman John Cooper. The addition of the beautiful Jen Ledger as drummer and backup singer has gotten Skillet even more won with her angelic, sweet voice that also has a sound of urgency and power.

The incredible and demanding "Awake and Alive" uses the beautiful vocals of Jen Ledger again and is a declaration of faith, saying that as Christians, we must stand up for our faith and stay strong through the hard times. The strings give a Comotose-ish glare to the song, but still does not fail what-so-ever.
"One Day Too Late" again shoots off the power ballad with a thoughtful song that sings about making a difference to the world as well as, in a way, evangelism. The power ballads fade away with the militant "It's Not Me It's You", which is an angry song about people who try to put you down for your beliefs, such as Christ or the way you dress. Another quite hard song that may give some people a dark feeling, but looking at it all around, it is a strong declaration of faith as well.
The poppy and, in a way, sassy "Should've When You Could've" is about relationships and how holding on once broken up has bad effects. Although it has a very exciting beat to it, the lyrics tend to be a little bit stangely rhymed. "Believe" again is about relationships and how drama gets in the way, but there is always a time to start over. The acoustic mixed with the electric really sounds awesome.
A much more happy and worshipful song, "Forgiven" deals with sinning and how no matter how many sings you have committed, God still loves you and he will forgive you if you repent. The instruments jam this song with a great piano intro with strings. The opposite of "Forgiven", "Sometimes" deals with the dark side that all of us have that we sometimes let win. It is, from the first note on, a dark song but is very realistic and is incredibly truthful. The line that might get families a little questioned, "I want someone to hurt like the way I hurt. It's sick, but it makes me feel better" serves a purpose, for it shows the angry side trying to overtake him. Songs aren't always made to be happy, but to serve a purpose.
"Never Surrender", a very hopeful song but also deals with hurt and trying to fit in, shows that someone is always there for you, whether it is the Lord Jesus Christ or someone you just want to talk to. The intro gives off some beautiful qualities Skillet has mastered, with a moving violin introduction, but then a drum solo adds in the guitars and bass. The final song, "Lucy", is a heart-wrenching piece which talks about the loss of a loved one, but trying to cope with it. It also deals with getting a second chance for a brand new start. It is beautiful, happy, and sure to get people crying in a heartbeat.
In conclusion, the fantastic album, "Awake", shows off many different genres, ranging fom head-banging hard rock to slow, moving pieces for all emotional people. Anyone who loves "Comotose" NEEDS to get "Awake". These rockers have matured in Christ over the years heavily and show it. I'm awake, I'm alive!

I was so looking forward for Skillet to put out another album. They did not disappoint me at all. This album is amazing! I love the fact that Jen gets to sing in "Awake and Alive" and "Hero". She has an amazing voice!
Waking Up to a New Sound :D
Skillet's lastest CD "Awake" is an amazing CD. With catchy track such as "Monster," the CD instantly causes a love for it. They keep their rock tone clear with catchy and effective lyrics like always. Skillet continues to amaze and astound through this new CD.

The song Believe is my least favorite of the album. I don't really have much to say about it.
Forgiven is another one of the best songs on the album. It helps the person realize that no matter how many promises you break, no matter how many times you turn away, God is always there to take you back and forgive you. The part where it says "I've loved another" is like a sermon my pastor preached one day out of the Bible where God was using a man to demonstrate how he feels about us. The man was instructed by God to marry a women who was unfaithful so that he could live how God feels about us because of how unfaithful we are.
Sometimes is right on target for me, that is how I feel sometimes. I feel like I don't want to be a better person, or feel better when I'm feeling bad. Sometimes I want other people to feel as bad or hurt as I do. Sometimes I know what I'm doing wrong and I just don't care. This song really pulls it out and puts it in perspective, it gets a person thinking.
Never Surrender is another life saving song by Skillet. It just pulls you through the tough times you are going through. It's another song that hits home with it's lyrics.
The saddest song on this album is Lucy, when I really think about it it brings tears to my eyes. It is left open enough that it can relate to any loss that a person has experienced, from suicide, abortion, death, anything really. It's lets you know that you have to love your family/friends while they are still there.
An expected non-progression
Skillet's lead-off singles ("Hero" to Christian radio and "Monster" to secular radio) demonstrated basically what the entire album turned out to become. "Hero" maintained the "Comatose" feel of heavy guitar riffs, strong lead male vocals, and a harsh female voice. "Monster" seemed like a fusion of "Collide" and "Comatose," with a slightly more "grungy" feel to it. "Awake" pretty much stays like that for the entire album, breaking only for slight variances from past projects (such as the intro to "Never Surrender")
Skillet demonstrates strong lyrical content as always, demonstrating why they are as popular now as ever... except for two HUGE stumbles. The greatest is their song "It's Not Me, It's You." "Don't Wake Me" is a romantic song. It's a beautiful slowdown after the first two energetic tracks. The beat returns once again with "Awake and Alive".
"Should've When You Could've" and "Believe" are weaker tracks. The former should almost definetively be skipped, and the latter isn't too promising.
"It's Not Me, It's You" and "Sometimes" have an angry mood. They are good songs to listen to when the going gets tought.

Overall, "Awake" is worth downloading. Owning the physical album, however, offers no advantage over the physical album. I still haven't listened to the two Deluxe tracks, "Dead Inside" and "Would It Matter".
Love Skillet but they aren't my favorite
This definitely isn't my favorite CD ever. I personally am a huge fan of RED. :) This is a great CD compared to some of Skillet's older stuff, sorry I'm just not a fan of Skillet's WAY old stuff. They seem to be making a come back, so props to them. I only have 3 songs I LOVE on the album, but I don't listen to it regurally either. Overall I would suggest it to others though. :)
Skillet is amazing!
Wow! That is all I can say about this new album. Skillet has done it again. They had some high expectations to meet when their previous cd Comatose was released. But I have to hand it to them, Awake is one of their best cds. Jen Ledger, their new drummer, is amazing. She even sings on the new record! I have been a Skillet fan for a long time and every time they release a cd I love their music more and more. Their music on the album Awake is very relative to a lot of real life situations and it has a positive message. Skillet rocks!
Impressive follow up
Upon the release of "Awake" Skillet took the music world by storm! Not only charting number one hits on Christian charts but also showing an impressive charting on mainstream. The latest album was one that had been anticipated for three years and had high expectations because of their previous album "Comatose" that been their best to date,music wise and reception wise, and Awake surely delivered. Debuting at #2 (tying the record) Awake gain raved reception and produced hits right off the bat.Songs including "Hero", "Monster" and "Awake and Alive" climbed charts and were picked up for themes to WWE pay per views,video games,and even soap operas.
Awake was one of the top albums of 2009 as well as the past decade,I highly recommend it.

The Cd opens with the Song “Hero” A song I got to hear when I saw them play live in Greensburg back in April. You can read my review of the concert over at jtindie.com. This first release is hook-heavy and already climbing Christian CHR (#15) and Rock radio (#6) charts. From the opening chord this song grabs you and doesn’t let go. The Cd continues on for ten more songs, Each of skillet’s musical offerings stands on its own and the album as whole really speaks to just how much the band as a whole has matured since putting out Comatose. One of the things I was most pleased to find was that while all the songs sounded like Skillet, the songs themselves didn’t sound like each other. The album is a well balanced and extremely well produced collection of songs that mesh well with each other. I can only imagine what these songs will do the live experience of the concert. I was only a passing fan of Skillet before I saw them live.
It is evident that Skillet has changed the landscape of Christian music with their last CD and three year long tour. Awake has the potential to roll over everything like some kind of juggernaut. Awake will be part of the new standard that other CD’s will be measured against, and it is clear to me that Skillet has, once again raised the bar.
I am having trouble trying to find anything to complain about. Everything from Song order, the production quality of the CD to the striking CD cover art is well thought out and excuted. with 11 tracks and coming in at only 38 + minutes I suppose my only real complaint would be that after three years, I personally would of been pleased to see a double album or something closer to 60 minutes of music. however, I don’t know if 60 minutes of music as intense as this album is, would be possible and I wouldn’t want the songs that are on the album to be diluted by anything that wasn’t up to the quality of the rest of the music on the CD.
So in the end I have to ask myself the question, was this Cd worth the three year Gap. Well I have decided that while I don’t want to have to wait another three years I am very satisfied with AWAKE and have given it the highest score I have yet to offer to anyone with a 4 and 3/4 stars out of a possible 5 Making AWAKE as I have said the new standard by which everyone else must strive for. I am expecting that once this CD drops on August 25th The landscape of Christian Music will once again find itself forever changed.
As I did with Disciple Southern Hospitality I will give you all a blow by blow account of the CD so to speak.
Track 1 - Hero - 03:06
This is the song that everyone has already heard and is probably the most signature skillet song on the CD. Which is, no doubt, the reason that this song was released as the single. From the First Chord to the last this is 100% Comatose. I can even see where the smoke would shoot out from the stage.
Track 2 - Monster - 02:58
This track has a harder sound than what I am used to with skillet. The Idea behind the song is pretty clear. “I hate what I’ve become the nightmare’s just begun i must confess that i feel like a monster” All of us have a dark side that we need to saved from. While this song is harder than what many people would think of when they think Skillet, I find this song to be a breath fresh air and it keeps the CD from falling into the trap of the Signature Sound. When you listen to the Song you don’t doubt that you are listening to skillet and the same time you know you are hearing something new.
Track 3 - Don’t Wake me - 03:56
Here the CD makes a marked turn into the land of Power ballad. “Don’t Wake me cause i don’t want to leave this dream, don’t wake me cause I never seem to stay to asleep, I know when its you I’m dreaming of I don’t want to wake up.” The overtones of unrequited love are so strong as to remind me of the times I felt (and still feel this way). Sometime the only time you can be with the one you love is when you dream about them.
Track 4 - Awake and Alive - 03:31
Skillet returns with a song so strongly influenced by the comatose album (and after touring for three years who could not be influenced by Comatose) that each time I hear it I think I am listening to the wrong CD. The strings that begin the Song are so synonymous with Skillet that I have to imagine that any other band does this at their own peril. With lyrics like “I’m at war with the world cause I ain’t never gonna sell my soul. I already made up my mind no matter what I can’t be bought or sold!” the meaning behind this song is clear. Personally I can’t wait to see them perform this Live with thousands of people singing along. I’m Awake, I’m Alive, I know what I believe inside!
Track 5 - One Day to Late - 03:40
Once again the style of music changes here, and while this song stops short of the Ballad I got to say that this song really touches me. I find myself listening to the words and wondering along with John, am I making the world a better place? “Today I’m gonna try a little harder Gonna make every minute last longer. Gonna learn to forgive and forget cause we dont have long, gonna make the most of it. Today I’m gonna love my enemies. reach out to somebody who needs me make a change, make the world a better place cause tomorrow could be one day to late.” The song is clearly about making the most of each moment since tomorrow may be one day to late.
Track 6 - It’s not me it’s You - 03:25
From the beginning chords and thrashing guitar it is clear this is an angry song. “Let get the story straight, you are poison. you flooded through my veins you left me broken you tried to make me think that the blame was all on me. with the pain you put me through and now I know that its not me its you!” This song is clearly aimed at all the people who look down on others for all the various reasons. i.e. clothes, music, tattoos. instead of seeing what God sees, A child he loves. Even when people treat us bad, we can turn to Christ and find ourselves empowered by putting our hope in Him instead of letting someone who’s giving you a hard time wear you down.
Track 7 - Should’ve when you Could’ve - 03:32
This song has a real 80’s sound, and reminds of one of the typical break-up songs of that period.
The song is about a girl being caught red-handed. While the song has a light and almost airy feel the message behind the music is pretty rock solid. You have to do the right thing when you get the chance to do since if you don’t, you very well may not get a second chance later.
Track 8 - Believe - 3:50
This song is serious and melodic song that I am finding to be a complex combination of melody and lyrics that I have been finding all to rare. The song screams of misunderstanding and unrequited love, still to call this song a simple ballad would be to seriously shortchange this song. This song has all the elements to rise above the classification of ballad. I am reminded of songs such as “Staind - Its been awhile”, “Incubus - Drive” and “3 doors down - When I’m Gone”.
Track 9 - Forgiven - 03:39
This is clearly one of the most overtly Christian song on the CD. While it is almost a federal law that a Christian band has to have a song about forgiveness, Skillet takes the concept on from a different angle and talks about not just the idea of letting someone down and being forgiven but also about acting in the forgiveness and not beating yourself up over the times you have failed. in this I am reminded of Luther’s saying Sin boldly for Christ forgives bolder still.
Track 10 - Sometimes - 03:29
This is a song I am kind of unsure about. From the very beginning the song has a very dark sound. This song is clearly about the struggle we all have with the darker part of our lives, and we all know of times when that darker part has won out. “Sometimes I dont want to be better. Some times I can’t be put back together. sometimes I find it hard to believe there someone else who can be just as messed up as me.” I am reminded of what Paul wrote in romans.
Romans 7:14-20 (NIV)
We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
While the song is dark I find some peace in knowing that I am not the only one who feels this way.
Track 11 - Never Surrender - 03:31
from my research I found that the original inspiration for this song came from a conversation John Cooper had with someone who was battling an eating disorder. “Do you know what its like when you’re scared to see yourself.” is the first line of this melodic pop rock sounding song. The idea that you don’t like who you are is something I am all to familiar with. in the song you hear the cry “You make me feel better, Put me back together, I don’t want to feel like tomorrow I don’t want to live like this today” Just having someone there for you, whether that is God or family member or just someone to listen to you and share your pain, Someone that isn’t going to give up. This is a rocking song with a solid message.
Track 12 - Lucy - 03:38
At first listen I thought I knew just what this song was about. The idea of losing someone close to you. “Hey Lucy I remember you name, I left a dozen roses on your grave today, I’m in the grass on my knees wipe the leaves away. I just came to talk for a while got some things I need to say.” As I listened to the song, over and over again, I realized that there was much more to this song. The Idea that there is always a chance of a brand new start. This is easily the most melodic song on the CD and vaults over Ballad and lands clearly into the Cell phone/Zippo light burning in the dark style of song. I loved every second of it.

Impressive
This is a job well done by Skillet. The songs have solid Christian lyrics and the instruments are rocking out. The album as a whole really tells a story. Jesus Christ is our Hero that died on the cross so we can be cleansed of our sins and saved from that Monster. As Christians, our souls are Awake and Alive so we can live our lives to give glory to God in everything we do. (refer to 1 Cor. 10:31) It has multiple hits and that is rare in one album. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes moderately loud Christian Rock.
Met Expectations
Skillet has once again produced a good cd with catchy, easy-to-sing-along-with music. However, if I didn't know this band was a band of Christians, I would never have guessed that they were. They dwell on break-ups and bad relationships for nearly half the cd, and it comes across as a lot less positive than their previous release, "Comatose". Good songs (saw it featured Saturday while watching college football - that is HUGE), but it seems that Skillet's more worried about catering to mainstream listeners than anything.

However, it seemed like the lyrics showed the singer not willing to let go of the situation and give it to God; instead they dwelled on it. That is my only complaint about this album. This album definitely does not fail to impress after several years since releasing their album Comatose. The album continues in the hard rock style of Skillet, with drums that pierce and guitars and lyrics that get the point across. Each song has its own definite meaning. I think my favorite two songs off the album are "Monster" and "Forgiven". "Monster" has a sort of new sound, but still some of the old sound of Skillet. I personally relate to it, feeling like a monster when I want to do good, what God wants, but find the monster inside me saying, "NO!" All this while rocking out! Yea! "Forgiven" is another good song because it tells of God's love, and how He constantly forgives us, no matter what we've done, or who we are.

hero is an amazing song, with a good message. Jen has an amazing voice! No offense to Korey, but Jen is way better.
Monster starts off with a catchy beat, and Johns vocals just take the song to the next level. The song is talking about sin. I also like the cool monster voice on the bridge.

Awake or Comatose re-packaged?
The comparisons from Comatose to Awake are so deep that the words ‘innovation’ and ‘original’ have no place anywhere near Awake. Great Cd
Ive been a fan and have loved skillet from the beginning. This is my favorite band. I really enjoyed this album, which start off with the great into of her, to the head banging monster, to the nice ballad of dont wake me, to the epic awake and alive, the angry its not me its you, the worshipful forgiven, the hopeful never surrender, and the sad but great song lucy. Although some may not enjoy it as much as Comatose, I greatly loved the album and hope its not the last
Skillet - Awake
Skillet - Awake is another great album from a great band, I only recieved the album after pre-ordering it back in july and waiting for it to be shipped to England but it was well worth the wait.
The album has some really good hard rock tracks but also great slower ballads.
The Christian meaning comes through very clear telling us how we can not waste our time here on earth and make the most of it, in that time we can spread the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. The first track on the album, Hero tells us how we can not live eternal life without a Hero to save us. we need someone who we can look up to for help if we need it, someone who is always there for us. The titles of some tracks just make you want the album: Awake and Alive, One Day To Late, Believe, Forgiven, Never Surrender all make clear the need for our Hero Jesus Christ.
The album as a whole is a must by for all those rock lovers and maybe if you like songs with a deeper meaning. Definitely a five star album !!!
No their best
This is a great CD! The only thing is, personally it didn't beat Comatose! With Collide and Comatose, they set the bar high but i dont think they reached it. Buyable? Yes! Best? No

forgiven is one of my favorites.
The thing is; you should listen the songs in quiet to let them hit your heart then your head after the second intent (listen) lets the party start and try to devour our hungry for God. and the need of Jesus.
I particularly do not like the Lucy song.
An album with to many ballads.
An album with to many ballads: This album "could've and should've" been somewhat better. There were really only four rockin songs that define skillet in this album: 1."Hero 2. "Monster" 3."Awake and Alive" 4."Somtimes". The rest of the album was mostly just ballads, good balleds but not what expected nor' wanted. Now i'll just wait for some music videos from these guys.
Comatose followup does not dissapoint
Skillet is absolutely amazing. Awake is a collection of passionate Skillet rock. Hero rocked my face off when I first listened to it. This song also introduces us to the vocals of Jen Ledger. Hero, as good as it is, is not my favorite song on the record. Awake and Alive is the highlight of the album in my opinion. This song also features Jen's vocals. Monster is a close second as far as favorite songs go. Its a great change of pace in the record, as it is quite a bit harder than any other song on the record. Also featured on this album are ballads, One Day Too Late and Don't Wake Me. Great Album. Not quite as good as Comatose, though. Still deserves 4.5 stars
Once again, Skillet has not ceased to impress
I bought this record with high hopes of their hard-music talent; I was not disappointed. Skillet has followed-up their popular cd, Comatose, with Awake, a powerful reminder that Christ is forever with us and we need not fear our flesh for He has covered all our sins.
I quite enjoyed this new attachment in Skillet's archive. I highly recommend this record if you liked their previous work, Comatose.

Best Album of the Year
This has been a long await album and it does not disappoint.
Starting out with the singles Hero and Monster the album really starts out on a fast start. Other favorite songs of mine that are "alive and awake" and "sometimes". Both are hard in your face rock and roll songs that get the blood pumping. I purchased the deluxe edition on iTunes and got three extra songs, Dead Inside, Would It Matter and an alternate version of Monster.
Overall this is an excellent album that has excellent lyrics that are very moving. I highly recommend this album to everyone.
Skillet Does It Again!!!!
Skillet returns with their first studio album in 3 years. Returning to the style of their previous album Comatose, Skillet and their new drummer, Jen Ledger, hit a home run with Awake. This album ranges from hard-rock songs (Sometimes) to ballads (Don't Wake Me). The only song I didn't feel belonged on the album was "Should've When You Could've". I love the song, but I didn't feel it fit in with the other songs. All in all, a great album from Skillet.
Intensely Orchestrational and Rock Filled
You can't go wrong with Skillet. I remember many years ago when I purchased their self-titled album SKILLET on cassette and I wore that thing out in my player. Skillet has continued to mature over the years as a rock band that influences people of all ages with their stringed melodies and rock aggression, hammered by lyrics thyat point to the One who can save us from ourselves, Jesus Christ! The self titled song AWAKE pounds out orchestrational dynamics with lyrics describing the war within us that wages with the world trying to kill our faith; but Christ breathes life into us awaking us from spiritual death. Be reminded that these guys are getting better and will continue to impact the Kingdom for many years to come. You gotta love Comatose Live! If you haven't seen the DVD, please find the CD/DVD combo and give it a chance! I've never seen a better performance than this one. Way to go guys! Continue to make each day a better day because tomorrow could be one day to late!

INSANE!!!!!
This album is most definitely the best so far. Skillet offers some heavy riffs, meaningful lyrics, and just a whole lot of awesomeness. These guys are probably one of my top 5 favorite bands. They have inspired me in so many ways. Keep on rockin' for Jesus Skillet!

Man, this group continues to knock it out of the park with their awesome vocals and anthem type rock songs. It was hard to imagine a follow up album to comatose that would be this good, but it is. Hope they stay together a long, long time.
Awesome driving rythym
It is a powerful musical and lyrical compliation a new level for this group. This is as good or even better than their previous album "Comatose", the song awake is a well written ballad with moving musical background

For me the Comatose vibe works well on the follow-up. However, I do think Comatose is a hard album to try and top and this album falls short just a little.
The first half of the project is rockin. Lyrics, vocals, beat, everything worked well. Also love the addition of jen and her vocals. The ballads are amazing and love the opening tracks.
Only issue i have is the 2nd half I find some (not all) of the songs tend to blend together. Don't think it is as solid as the first half. Don't care for It's Not Me It's You, Should've When You Could've, and Sometime. Lyrics aren't to shabby but didn't do much for me listening to them.

I am one of those life long fans of Skillet that has listened to them since their self-titled debut. It some ways it's not a surprise Awake sounds very, very, similar to Comatose. The title "Awake" could be the answer to the previous album title, linking them together. On the other hand Comatose was by far their most successful album, so it's no surprise they want to capitalize and what has worked for them. Yet, at the same time I wished they would have taken more chances with their sound, like the old Skillet would have. Are they selling out? You be the judge.
From a personal stand point I've always felt Skillet's strong point was the more aggressive sound. Not that the ballads are bad, (you know John loves his 80's ballads) I just find my self skipping them when listening to their albums in opposition to the heavier songs. Basically, Awake is Comatose with subtle changes, the nice addition of Jen's vocals, and the fact it an all around softer record musically. Some might like this and be very happy. But for those of us who go to their shows wanting a heavy rock performance may be a little less than satisfied. Hero and Monster (the two leading singles) are some of the strongest tracks on the record, along with Awake and Alive, It's not me It's You, Sometimes, and Forgiven. But some of the lyrics occasionally come across a little more cheesy and less mature than songs on previous albums.
I haven't had a chance to look at the lyrics but by listening to the Album I can make a educated guess that Awake may be more of a concept album where each song tells another chapter in the story. I find it to be about a person who is going through struggles with rage and bad relationships to finding Christ, receiving salvation from everything he was dealing with then losing a dear friend "Lucy" to death.
So the bottom line is... It's still Skillet. It's got the catchy rhythms and vocals, and great composition Skillet is known for. But it comes across as more of the same thing that was offered on Comatose but not quite as good. I personally was hoping they would take the aggressiveness found on Collide and mix it with the symphonic rock sound found on Comatose with some yet to be heard elements. Needless to say, It didn't happen this time around. On it's own, apart from past efforts it's a solid album with plenty to love, and I feel it's one that will grow on the listener with more listens. Some who are new to Skillet and loved Comatose will most-likely really enjoy this album, if not more than Comatose. But the veteran Panheads, like myself, may feel like they could have done better.

Awake by Skilet is sooooooooooo awesome.I'm definitely buying it when it comes out. My fave song is probably One Day Too Late or Hero. I definitely recommend this cd.
A little disappointed
I really was expecting more out of Skillet from this new album. But when I listened, it was good, but not as good as Comatose. Comatose was the greatest Skillet album. I'm sure these songs will grow on me, but it may take a little. Awake and Alive is my new favorite song though.
Overall, a good album, definitely worth the price. You wont be too disappointed!
Amazing!!!
I am so excited for this album release. It's been about 3 years since Skillet's last studio album! "Awake" might actually be better than "Comatose", but don't get me wrong, I loved that album. I have to say, this album has a great balance of harder rock and softer, more sentimental music. I especially love Jen Ledger's vocals on "Monster" and "Awake and Alive". I am definitely picking this one up on the 25th and would recommend it to anyone.
Like a Fine Wine -- Skillet gets better with age
About a month or so ago I heard the radio single Hero on ChristianRock.net and I was blown away. I immediately said "I want this album", not a common response. I usually pick up an album at least six months after its release, after I've heard it on internet radio, picked up a few downloads, and otherwise made my decision on the CD. Not this time.
Awake is Skillet's finest, deepest, and loudest album to date. Compared to this, I think Comatose is now referred to as Southern Gospel. Awake is the epitome of Christian Industrial music. The addition of Jen Ledger as Drummer and Third Vocalist (after John and Korey) was a move of Genius, as her screaming vocals make Awake and Hero. Power Ballads such as Don't wake me, Believe, and Forgiven are spot on, and if you don't cry when you hear Lucy, I have to question if you are actually human. Awake is Skillet Unleashed, and other bands now have to Chase them.
Personally, I award this Album Album of the Year (are you listening Grammy's, what about you Dove's?). Get the album today for "Tomorrow could be one day too late."

although not there best album yet, not incompared to comatose in my eyes. but still worthy of a pre-order.defently. ther strongest songs in ther new album awake are probably hero(defenatly),monster,
and awake and alive. there are a few songs that probably a bit to slow to me but i know i will listen to them over an over again.
so to all those panheads, buy the album because no matter what skillet's awsome and will always be awsome.

skillet is one of my favorite bands, they make great music, and have lots of talent. with that said i can only give this album a three because its just not as good as they can make.
Skillet, Awake
I did not like this album at all. It sounded as if the group was just screaming all the lyrics. Because the lyrics were being screamed, it was hard to understand them. I am sure the group is sincere in there commitment to Christian music, but I don't care for their style of music.
Worth the wait!
I think that this album, once out, will be a huge success. Not only financially, but spiritually. It's hard to judge it from a stream...but i know when i get it in my player it will be there for months to come....honest content, great sound, and it doesn't seem like a short album. And that's good! Thank you Skillet!
Seems Pretty Solid
Awake is the upcoming release from Christian Rock Band, Skillet. Having heard of Skillet but never actually checking them out, I decided that since it was convenient that I would check them out. I listened to the album all the way through and it seems solid but I may have to listen to it again and let it marinate before I decide if I like this group and their latest release.

Akake, the most recent cd to be released from Skillet on the 25th, In my opinion is another great cd, Skillet from their first cd till now has changed their sound so much, they started off with a grungy Nirvana like sound then evolved to techno rock, then industrial rock with a taste of orchestra stringed instroments, their message has changed a bit ...Still singing about the love of Christ but delivering it in a different way. More recently in Collide their message has been a message of love and hope but more directed to the people hurting in the world or the people who are broken and need to be strong. Comatose had a similar message but more directed to people who need to be a light of the world and be a friend to somone who needs a friend in these bad times. Awake seems to be a similar message, expressing more points, like Monster, wich seems to be a song about somone having an anger problem or having a hard time dealing with a ugly internal strougle with good and evil. My point is people may not like that new Comatose sound or the softer songs but they are very well written, no band can make 8 or 9 cds and have every fan like every cd. I wouldnt mind a heavier cd but im more than happy with the hard work Skillet has put into this cd. Keep it up guys!
Glorifying the Lord to a powerful rock rhythm
It was a year ago at Revelation Generation in NJ that I first saw Skillet live. I knew their hits but was so jazzed by their live show which moved me to backtrack and find their earlier music. I'd have to say Comatose was my favorite (and really enjoyed the Live album and DVD).
I've been waiting for Awake and have enjoyed hearing Hero and Monster over the last months since their release - pre-ordered it as soon as I could. No disappointment! It is everything we've been waiting for.
The production is amazing on top of the writing, the playing and the singing. I hope there is the kind of crossover success that would bring this great music to a wider audience - no reason any number of these songs couldn't be mainstream hits.
The band still keeps their priorities straight - it's all an offering to the Lord and a proclamation of the Gospel.
I'm looking forward to the Awake tour coming to Philadelphia in October.

They put out another stunning album and showed why they continue to be one of the best out there, combining ballads and solid heavier songs into another amazing record.
I've been following Skillet since Invincible and the evolution of this band is evident!

This album is amazing Skillet jumped far over the hurdles AGAIN! I love Hero I like how they added Jen singing. Monster is a good song it shows Skillet's true rock side. This is one album you will not regret in buying!
Awesome Lyrics!
I really love Skillet's music and the lyrics they write! I like how they center their music on a relationship with God, and how as Christians we still face the pain, hurt and the things that life throws our way. We are living in a world that is hurting everyday from people and the situations around us! Skillet's music touches many people that are searching for answers but are not really sure how to find them! I like how Skillet's new album "Awake" has a soft piano and sweet violins that are combined with great guitar riffs! I believe the lyrics in the new album are much deeper than the past stuff they have written! I believe it is also amazing that the band has two chicks that can really rock out! Korey Cooper is amazing on the piano and the guitar...rocking out with her husband! I just have to say i recently saw Skillet for the first time at Harvest Crusade! They really rocked the show! I would definitely recommend Skillet's music to my friend that is depressed and many other things! I would recommend Skillet to anyone that wants great rock and lyrics that are real and truthful...! Awake!
Ok well Skillet has done it again by making another awesome album... between it and comatose i like it a bit better even thought it seems a little more mellow and not as fast pace as other albums they have made. Still my favorite band. Was kinda hoping for some old school skillet on this one but owell still top notch. good job skillet

Skillet fans won't be disappointed by Awake!!! This CD keeps you charged up and challenges you to check out your walk with God. There are truths sung out that hit to the heart and makes you realize just how awesome it is to be 'Forgiven' and that He is our everyday 'Hero'!! As 2007 reached its end, Skillet said farewell to longtime drummer Lori Peters. Fortunately, the band recovered shortly thereafter and recruited fresh, new talent in the form of 19 year old drumming prodigy Jen Ledger, whom they found in London, England. With a string of tours in 2008, as well as being able to show off her skills on the band's "Comatose Comes Alive" live CD/DVD, Ledger proved herself to be more than a perfect replacement. In early 2009, Skillet returned to the studio to record their 9th release "Awake," their first studio album in 9 years to feature a different individual providing the drumwork.
Musically, "Awake" picks up where 2006's "Comatose" left off, containing plenty of alternative rock hooks coupled with Jon's signature heart-felt screams and harmonius melodies. The songs' messages touch on issues such as the ugliness of one's own sin nature ("Monster"), taking focus off one's self and giving credit to God ("It's Not You It's Me"), and dreaming of a lasting love that seemed to have been lost in the real world ("Don't Wake Me"). "Never Surrender is a mid-tempo tune that is also about a love relationship, but may be construed by listeners as a relationship between a man and woman instead of being between man and God. While some of the album's themes may not directly point to Christ, they still maintain a spiritual level of morale and do not falter from the truth.
Overall, fans of albums such as "Collide" and "Alien Youth" might have a hard time swallowing "Awake" as it contains almost as many ballads as heavier tracks. On a lighter note though, those who fell in love with "Comatose" will quickly find a new Skillet favorite to add to their CD collection. While not their strongest effort, "Awake" is a Skillet album fans old and new will not soon forget.

At first I heard Monster and Hero, those are 2 really good songs. Then I heard the preview of the whole album and thought that it wouldn't be as good as Collide or Comatose, but once I heard the whole album I think it is a really good album.
I love the new drummer and her voice. This is a must buy for any Christian rock listener.

Better and Better
Skillet just keeps getting better and better.This is there best album yet. Although there other ones are awesome as well.
Usually after putting out so many albums, bands will start loosing their touch and start getting held up in the fame. I'm happy to say Skillet is definitely not one of these bands!

I do not believe it will make it onto my "Albums to get" list. :- *sigh*
An alternative to check out would be Decyfer Down's new album: "Crash".

Another Hit Factory by Skillet
Skillet has done it again. "Awake" will definitely generate many hit singles. The first two singles start the album, then it slows down to let you breathe before pumping you up again. This has to be John's most transparent album to date. The songs are so raw and honest; something I have grown to love about Skillet. "Awake and Alive" is by far the best song on this album. "It's not me, It's You," will have fists pumping at a concert near you, so get ready! The fall music scene has started off with a bang!

Okay well if you know anything about christian hard rock, then you know Skillet. They always delivered with massive drums and heavy guitars, and Doggie on vocals lol. Their newest album Awake doesn't dissapoint. With tracks such as "Monster" (That stops halfway thru the song to have Doggie use an octaver on his voice to make him sound like hes growling but not, which is epic.) "Hero"(Which is a good song about redemption and salvation thru Jesus Christ.) its just an awesome album. Not only that, BUT ITS JEN FIRST ALBUM RECORDING! Jen is awesome and adds some heaviness to Skillet (If thats possible lol.) with double kicks and sheer awesomeness lol.
Filled with signature riffs, and all the strings you've come to love this is yet another awesome album from the "Heaviest" band in christian rock.

First off, I was completely blown away by the entire album. It will go down as one of my favorites, if not my favorite. I won't talk about hero or monster cause most people have already heard those.
3. Don't Wake Me 8/10- I'm not a huge fan of ballads, but this one gets it done
4. Awake and Alive 10/10- Will probably go down as my favorite song now.
5. One Day Too Late 9/10- Beautiful lyrics once again. John does an amazing job on vocals like usual.
6. It's Not Me, It's You 9.5/10- I'd be too hesitant if I gave it a ten. An aggressive song with lyrics many can connect to.
7. Should've When You Could've 6/10- My only problem with the CD, this songs seems out of place.
8. Believe 8/10- Once again, a ballad does a pretty good job.
9. Forgiven 10/10- Very Beautiful!
10. Sometimes- 9/10- A dark, but accurate depiction of life at times.
11. Never Surrender 10/10- Many people will be touched by this one.
12. Lucy 10/10- I actually cried during this one. It's still very beautiful
Best Album Yet
I just listened to the new skillet album and I think it is the best album they have put out to date. I definitley suggest purchasing this for yourself and others. Would make a GREAT Christmas gift.

One of the strongest tracks on the album, “Believe,” was added after Awake was thought
to be complete. Lyrically, “Believe” isn’t so different from the rest of the album. What
makes the song stand out is it’s melancholy manner and rawness.
Many tracks on Awake sound like they came straight off of Comatose- “Hero,” “Awake & Alive,” “Forgiven,” “Should’ve When You Could’ve,” “One Day Too Late,” “Don’t Wake Me.” While many will be quick to label Awake as Comatose part 2 (myself included), a good portion of the album features tracks that are more stripped down (“It’s Not Me It’s You,” “Believe,” “Sometimes,” “Never Surrender”) than those found on Comatose. But, the most important aspect remains unchanged - the message.
Closing Thoughts:
Awake wasn’t particularly what I was looking for from Skillet. I’d prefer more of a resemblance to Collide, or even Alien Youth, than Comatose. But I can’t fault the band for sticking with what’s popular. After all, the goal is to bring hope to as many lives as possible, isn’t it?

alright im a total PanHead and so as you know i know all there songs, but all these songs are just great some of there best records and i thought it would be hard to top comatose but i think that this album deffintly surpassed it

This album will not let you down. I have been a skillet fan since the release of Alien youth and they have yet to disappointment me. This album is full of guitars, strings and vocals that will definitely leave you feeling Awake and alive.

Skillet Returns Wide AWAKE!
I was introduced to Skillet by a friend in 2006 right after the release of their album "Comatose." Instantly fell in love with "Rebirthing" with the synthesized string progressions. I later bought the CD and said after listening that "Comatose" was a CD chock full of smash hits which proved to be true: 5 #1 singles off of 1 album! That's gotta be a record right!? But without further ado, I gotta say, Skillet has done it again. More synthesized string progressions that I fell in love with the first time, electric guitars that just seem to burst out of the speakers. My favorites are the singles "Hero," "Monster," and the title track "Awake and Alive" as well as "Lucy" which spoke to me because of the recent loss of my mother. I like all of the other ballads as well with the acoustic guitar being utilized during the verses. Most artists fail trying to outdo the previous album that did as good as "Comatose" but Skillet just keeps on trucking with a newer and fresher sound and building upon what they've already accomplished. All I've gotta say is keep 'em coming!

Dude, listening to the first two singles, my body is shaking with excitement. I almost went into a coma listing to Comatose over and over again, not that it wasn't any good (it was awesome!) but 3 years is too long to wait for new Skillet. The wait is over!!!! Well not really, we have a month to go, but anyways. "Hero" and "Monster" lead the CD off with a bang, and I can't wait to find out if the rest of the album is just as good as the first two singles. EXCITED :)
