Hierdoor ontstonden grote meren zoals de Westeinderplassen, het Stommeer, het Hornmeer, de Oosteinderpoel en het Noord- en Zuid Legmeer. In 1640 hadden de inwoners van Aalsmeer nog 1590 morgen (een oude meeteenheid waarvan de grootte sterk varieert in verschillende regio's) cultuurgrond. In 1840 was er nog maar 550 morgen over, waarvan het grootste deel in de wintermaanden onder water stond. Alleen grootschalige drooglegging kon voorkomen dat meer wijken zoals Westeinde, Geilwijk, Rijshorn, Rijsdrecht en Ruigenhoek door het water werden verzwolgen. In 1650 werd het Stommeer al drooggelegd, gevolgd door het Hornmeer in 1674, de Schinkelpolder in 1858, de Oosteinderpoel in 1867 en de beide Legmeren tussen 1877 en 1883.
