Ignite is the follow-up EP to Candice Russell's debut album, So Much More. Russell grew up singing in church, developing a passion that led to a spot as a contestant on American Idol Season 11. Her flawless and pure vocal tone has been compared to pop icons like Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson, proof of the way her singing style boasts a maturity beyond her age.

Following up her engaging and personal songs "So Much More" and "Summer Nights," on her latest album Candice Russell takes it up a notch with even deeper tracks like "Through My Eyes" and "Thanks for the Heartbreak." I had the chance to speak with Candice about the upbeat title track "Ignite."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

It all kind of starts about six years ago. When I graduated from high school I was diagnosed with Grave's disease, which is a thyroid disease. It ended up being a long journey of overcoming health struggles and learning to trust God through my failing health.

The crazy thing is that through all of that, I was trying to make it in the music industry. There were times along the way when it was super discouraging, as I was trying to break in to music and I wasn't healthy. There were some moments when I felt so discouraged and overwhelmed, and then God would remind me to ignite that light inside of me and remind me of the dreams He had put in my heart. The song is talking about how even in our weakest moments to remember our God-given dreams and never give up. I feel like the song is an anthem to not give up.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

2 Timothy 1:6 (AMP): "That is why I would remind you to stir up, rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning the gracious gift of God, the inner fire that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands with those of the elders at your ordination."

Matthew 5:14-16 (The Message): "Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."

Isaiah 43:18-19 (The Message): "Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand-new. It's bursting out! Don't you see it? There it is! I'm making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands."

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."

Romans 8:28 (VOICE): We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.

Philippians 1:6 (NIV): being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

What is the takeaway message?

I think as Christians, we can really shine for Jesus. There's something special about us when we sing or are living out the dreams that God has for us, because God is within us. The song is talking about shining our light like a city on a hill as it says in Matthew 5:16.

Going back to my song "So Much More," it has encouraged me in those moments where I feel discouraged. I even have to let my own song remind me sometimes. It's easy to feel discouraged when things aren't happening as fast as you want them to or in the order you want them to happen. Definitely what I want someone to take away from this song and album is that God gives us strength even in our weak moments, and He puts a dream in your heart for a reason. He chose you, and you are meant to do something for Him. My motto is to never give up. That's not always easy, but it is what God calls us to do. He wants us to persevere and live for Him.

Lyrics:
Feel like a broken record
Stuck on the same sad song
But you keep on believing
That it won't play out wrong

There's nothing that you haven't seen life throw at you
Oh but, you're a fighter, oh, yeah you're a fighter
I know you'll make it through
I've seen the strength in you
Even on your darkest night

You're burning bright
There's fire in your eyes
Shine your light
And find that spark inside
And oh...Ignite
I feel Your fire, I feel Your fire
And oh...Ignite

You're rising from the ashes
Of all your fears and doubts
Just let your flame grow higher and higher
You've come too far to give up now

There's nothing that you haven't seen life throw at you
Oh but, you're a fighter, oh, yeah you're a fighter
I know you'll make it through
I've seen the strength in you
Even on your darkest night

You're burning bright
There's fire in your eyes
Shine your light
And find that spark inside
And oh...Ignite
I feel Your fire, I feel Your fire
And oh...Ignite

Burning, burning bright, you're a fighter

Matthew 5 tells us: "You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept." Sometimes Christians know facts about the Bible but don't live out the Truth that the Holy Spirit is living inside of us. The beauty of walking by faith and not by sight is that we can trust God. As followers of Jesus, we know that we can trust God's Word. We are all a work in progress. Have faith and let God "work all things together for good."

Spend time with God, and let Him redeem and restore you. We are not at the end of our story. God's still writing our stories of redemption. God wants us to know that He's faithful to complete what's He's started in all of us who have put our hope and trust in Jesus for our salvation. God is bigger than any calamity that we experience in this world. His love never fails! Thank You Jesus! Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."

"Ignite" is an exciting heart cry to live out Matthew 5:16 as Candice cries out: "You're burning bright, there's fire in your eyes, shine your light and find that spark inside." All we need is faith, and God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the author of our lives and He knows what's best for us much better than we do.

My conviction based on these Bible passages and this song is to stop and listen to God and find out what He is asking me to "ignite." Growing up, I expected to find success in worldly pursuits and thought happiness and joy could be won in the game of life. Since I've come to be a follower of Jesus, I now have a better understanding that success for Christians is defined differently. Be encouraged by the light of Jesus shining in all of us based on our faith in Him. Personally, I am moved knowing that Jesus is shining in me for all to see and believe. Perhaps in the next few weeks leading up to Christmas we can all practice "letting our light shine so that others may praise our Father in Heaven." Please join in with Candice and pray: "I feel Your fire... ignite!" Amen to that!
