#563 - "You're The Best Thing" by We Are Leo
We Are Leo lead singer David Duffield talks about where we find meaning and joy in a hurried, broken world.

Smooth electronic-leaning pop group We Are Leo has continued to gain momentum since the release of their debut album Hello in 2011. Their sparkling sound and energetic live shows gained the support of a fan base that stood behind the band in 2013 when the artists launched a Kickstarter project.

The result of that momentum is their sophomore release Fightback Soundtrack, available everywhere October 14. This album is the culmination of the band's passions for their fans, their music, and their deep faith, housed in their signature catchy sound. I had the chance to speak with lead singer David Duffield about the catchy lead single, "You're The Best Thing."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I know for myself, I've fought through loneliness and depression over the years, trying to figure out life and what it is all about. We all live in the midst of a broken and beautiful world. You can see that in the midst of people checking Facebook at stop lights. We are all trying to find the right jobs, right relationships and we are hoping that the money is going to last. Those are definitely the things I've dealt with in the past.

In the midst of all that busyness and forgetfulness on our parts, Jesus is standing there knocking at our hearts. He is telling us "I am the Truth, I am the Life. The life that really matters is Me." To me, this song is about coming back to that Truth.

For me, my life was radically changed from someone who was fighting depression, anxiety and fear, to someone who isn't there yet, but is learning to be brave. I need to remember that He is the best thing in my life. In says in the Psalms "Your love is better than life." In the New Testament, Paul tells us he counts everything as loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus.

This song is about remembering those things on a daily basis. I want people to hear this song and remember that. They might be dealing with something and not taking time to be thankful for the blessings that they have received. Imagine how much joy we can experience if we fix our minds on what is true and noble instead of everything that is wrong with the world. That's the basic idea behind the song.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 63:3-4 (VOICE): Your steadfast love is better than life itself, so my lips will give You all my praise. I will bless You with every breath of my life; I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name.

Philippians 3:7-11 (NIV): But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Philippians 4:8 (VOICE): Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.

What is the takeaway message?

I love the line that says "Picked me up and told me to be brave." It just talks so much about "do not be afraid, I am with you, do not be anxious about anything" and these sorts of themes throughout the Bible. I'm focusing on what is true, and I've been given a beautiful life. That new life that Christ has given me is the best thing.

I make a reference to being brave in virtually every song on the album. It is called Fightback Soundtrack, and one of my favorite lines in the title track is "Love will make us brave." We are coming back to this idea of not letting things get us down or allowing circumstances to dictate our level of joy and contentment. God has given us the ability to not just accept the world for what it is, but to get up and don't believe the lies. Live by faith, fight back, and be brave.

It was cool for me to hear the Bethel song "You Make Me Brave," because our whole album is also saying to be strong, be courageous, be brave, fight back. It seems like it is a theme right now. As I've written these songs, I have felt the synergy of being on the same page with what God is saying to other songwriters.

I can feel You smiling over me
You broke my chains & set me free
You touched my heart and made me come alive
I'm thankful every single day

I'm held forever in Your grace
I know You're always with me by my side
I'll take Your hand
I won't be scared
I'm trusting You now

And it's the Best thing.
That ever happened to me
That ever happened to me
And I'll never let You go oh oh

You're the Best thing.
That ever happened to me
That ever happened to me
And I'll never let You go oh oh

I remember when You called my name
Picked me up and told me to be brave
I never thought I'd find a love so true
I know I'm safe inside Your hands

Trusting You always have a plan
No matter what storms I am going through
I've left behind, my old life, just to know You.

We are presented with the daily choices of how to use our time, lifestyle choices, pursuit of riches, living for today not knowing what tomorrow has in store for us, questioning our loneliness and looking for meaning. You can take comfort in these words from Philippians 3:7: "I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things."

Don't spend too much time thinking about our circumstances and what we can do to improve them. Connect with God's heart for us, which is "do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Living faithfully is a large enough task for today" (Matthew 6:34, The Voice).

I've read that God tells us 365 times in His Word "do not fear" or "do not worry," enough for a daily reminder to not spend time caught up in ourselves, but allowing ourselves to be satisfied with a fresh filling of God and His Holy Spirit every day.

The theme lyric of this song and album is "picked me up and told me to be brave." We Are Leo, along with other artists this year, have been inspired by God's Word to be brave in the face of worldly fear. God has been bringing that theme to our attention as Christians through Brave by Shawn McDonald, Brave by Moriah Peters and You Make Me Brave by Bethel Music's Amanda Cook.

The musical vibe and inspirational lyrics of this song represent the true joy that we are called to have in Christ, regardless of our circumstances. The world defines finding meaning by our accomplishments and how we are feeling. We know from Ecclesiastes that "everything under the sun is meaningless." This song celebrates the eternal truth of what is actually meaningful, that knowing Jesus is the "best thing that's ever happened to me, and I'll never let You go." Amen to that!
