#558 - "No Better U" by V. Rose
V. Rose talks about the freeing knowledge that the identity God has given us means we never have to strive to be anyone but ourselves.

Speaking about her sophomore album, Forever After, Clear Sight Music artist V. Rose shares, "My hope is that this record will cause people to see their lives in relation to eternity, to stop and think about the things they say and do, and ultimately realize the realness of Christ and His return."

One of V. Rose's strengths in addition to her strong vocals are her infectious and engaging lyrics. V. Rose is a wonderful role model for any age girl. Being a father of three young daughters, I heartily recommend V. Rose's songs for fans of artists like Britney Spears and Katy Perry.

Unlike mainstream pop artists who often sing about topics that aren't uplifting, V. Rose sings songs about finding her identity and putting all of her hope and trust in her "forever after" by living every day for Jesus. We were created and made in the image of God. Society puts pressure on all of us to conform and feel like we need to fit in. The Truth of the Bible is that we are told to "not conform to the patterns of this world," to become more like Him instead.

Every song on this album is infused with an infectious passion about her unashamed faith in Jesus Christ. I had the great opportunity to speak with V. Rose in person about "No Better U" after watching her set at Creation Northeast.

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This song is very special to me. I think about the girls who comment on my social media, who are always telling me how beautiful they think I am and how they wish they could be like me. That seems to be the craze of our generation. People seem to want fame and fortune. This is my personal message back to all of them.

I feel like hiding out underneath my hoodie some days; I feel horrible about how I look and insecure about everything, just like they do. Day by day there's always something new. People think I don't face that stuff anymore, but I do. It's a constant battle where I need to remind myself that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we wish we looked like because we see someone else we think is perfect. I know the feeling, trust me. But that's when we have to stop and remember that we are not average. I have to tell myself, stop, this is how God made you. It was a beautiful realization for me to understand that no one in the entire world could be better at being me than I could. No one can be a better you!

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Song of Songs 4:7 (NIV): You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.

Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.

Psalm 139:14 (NKJV): I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.

1 Peter 3:3-4 (NIV): Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

Romans 8:28 (NKJV): And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

What is the takeaway message of the song and album?

Don't try to be someone else. That's just wasting time. God has given you a beautiful and awesome personality and person to be. In the song I sing "do what you do for God." Not only do I want people to know that they are awesome and have the confidence to battle their daily insecurities, I want them to turn around and in all things glorify God. I want to encourage everybody that you've been given gifts from God and to use those gifts to exalt Him. God says, If He's lifted up He'll draw all men to Himself. We are not here to live for ourselves. We are here to glorify God and to live for Him, with the hope to live with Him for eternity.

The album is based on Revelation 21. The chapter talks about Heaven and eternity with God and how there will be no more tears, death and crying because He is making everything new. We will all spend eternity somewhere, and what we do in this life does count for something, so don't throw it away believing the 'you only live once' lies. Everybody lives twice.

It is important for me to communicate this message because I know young minds are so easily persuaded by things that look harmless, but are actually very dangerous. If I can be any kind of light or role model to combat the attractive— but damaging—messages being shoved in people's faces, then I will.

I feel like hiding out
Underneath my hoodie, some days
I just don't feel pretty, some days
I admit that
I bet you didn't know I get like that

I'm hiding from my Twitter, sometimes
Everything's not glitter, sometimes
They mess with my head
Make me wish that I was
Someone else instead, hey

But then, I finally tell myself, stop
You don't need to be what you're not
Nobody to be better than you
So do what you do for God

Sometimes we wish we were someone else, but
You've gotta take a look at yourself and
Know that nobody else in the world can
Be a better you
A better you

Listen to me, please don't give up trying
I've been there too I've been the one crying
No one can be me better and I can't

Be a better you
A better you
Be a better you
A better you
Be a better you
A better you

I feel like giving up
Every other day you know
I really gotta pray, you know
And try to kick that
Cause sometimes life hits right back
I don't want to face the day sometimes
I really hate the rain sometimes
I try to keep dry
Seems impossible
However hard I try, hey

God made you
Just like you are
So live for Him
Don't worry about anyone else
One two three
Take a deep breath
Pick up your head
You gotta know

In watching V. Rose's set on the Fringe Stage at Creation, she asked the crowd how many people were saved and shared about how God want wants to use them for our good and His glory. I have 3 young daughters, and I can't help but get emotional when I listen to this song. I know it speaks to girls and women of all ages, and I relate to the message that God created us to have value. The song is a great reminder of the kind of heart we should have both as people valued by God and as Christians who can communicate our value to other people.

There are several great themes that are faced by women and girls specifically that the album addresses in a mature and faith-based way. This song is about being made in God's image and not seeking society's approval, but knowing that God created and loves us all as we are. That critical message is heard loud and clear in "No Better U."

Don't let the world tell you who you are. It doesn't matter what you look like if you have Jesus on the inside. We can find our true identities in Him. A great takeaway message is found in the lyrics, "You don't need to be what you're not, nobody to be better than you, so do what you do for God." Amen to that!
