Wake Up!

While I was working this morning at Jeff Street, I walked into the hallway and saw a gush of water just flowing on the floor in the basement of the day shelter. I knew it was raining, but I didn’t know it was raining that bad. The water was shooting up from the drain by the water fountain. Then as if that wasn’t enough; it was gushing down the main hallway by the main office like a river. It wasn’t no time until the entire staff and then some residents were running around trying to plug up doors with towels to keep the water from flowing in other doorways. Even reacting that fast, there was still about two inches of water on the floor.

As we were rushing around trying to clean up the water, I couldn’t help but see a homeless man sleeping leaned over on a fold-up chair in the hallway. We woke him up and told him it was flooding. He seemed a little suprised at first, but then he raised his feet up to the bar of the chair and fell back a sleep. This shocked me, when I first saw it flooding I was wide awake and was trying my best to stay out of it while trying to clean it up. I’ve never seen a flood this bad (and I was told that this one really wasn’t that bad). What really made me think was seeing that man and how the flood didn’t affect him.

Sometimes God trys to wake us up from our sleep. I’m not talking about the sleep we get everynight, but our spiritual sleep. As Christians it’s really easy to become comfortable in where you stand in your busy week. The world is constantly going and there’s really not enough time in the day to get everything done that you need to. It’s easy to become distracted from God’s plan. It’s easy to fall asleep in your spiritual walk.

“Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.” – 1 Corinthians 15:15

When you become too busy in your daily schedule and you feel like you’ve lost what God has planned for you, just stop and listen. He is calling you back; don’t allow yourself to fall asleep in Christ. Also, if He trys to wake you, don’t ignore Him: for His plans are much greater than our own.
