The Mighty Men of Faith are a truly anointed group. God has continued to bless them; he knows that their music ministry is not to achieve fame and glory but to do their best to encourage believers and to bring into the Church body the loss and discouraged. The Mighty Men of Faith say their music is “our instrument to share God’s Grace and Mercy with others. In today’s world we all need encouragement. We believe gospel music provides encouragement and reminds us of our blessings so we can go tell others of God’s goodness. Our appreciation to God should be verbalized through prayer, through our conversations with Him, and ultimately shown to others by our actions and relationships. We are hopeful that our music will enrich, enlighten and inspire listeners of all ages”.
The Mighty Men of Faith mission is to spread the Word of God through music to the masses. As such they are willing, much like Jesus to take the Word to a variety of venues. In addition to Churches in California they have sung at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, CA., at Yoshi’s in Oakland’s Jack London Square, in Parks, and at Theaters. The group also traveled to Nashville, Tenn. for the Bobby Jones Presents show that appeared on the Impact Television Network. The renowned Bobby Jones after the group sang said “They can definitely sing.”
So how did the Mighty Men of Faith begin? It all began at the University AMEZ Church in Palo Alto CA. One of the members Wendell Basey was invited to join the Choir after joining the Church in 2006 after being absence from Church for over 30 years. His best friend Malvin Scott in 2007 started going to Choir practice and became a member of the church as well. Malvin prior to that time had never joined any Church. He and Wendell had previously sung together in a secular group called Onyx. Neither had done any singing since they recorded the song “Break it Loose” in the 70’s. Their membership in the Choir brought about a closer relationship with God and created a desire to sing just for the Lord through participation not only in the Choir but in a Gospel Quartet as well. This led to inviting William “Pedie” Carswell another member of the Church Choir to join them in a vocal group. Rev. Edward Harris who was assigned to the Church as Pastor in 2008 was also asked to join. These four gentlemen decided to sing
as part of the welcome to the Church ceremony for Rev. Harris. Based on the success of that effort they were invited to participate in the Churches Men’s day program where the MC of the program introduced them as the Mighty Men of Faith. The group adopted the name and since then the group has continue with fervor, zeal and faith to present the message of God through song. They have a unique sound influenced by the likes of the
Whispers, Temptations, Marvin Sapp, William Brothers, and others. Their music includes a blend of contemporary and traditional Gospel/Christian music peppered with a modern urban soul flavor that will, without a doubt, help them to achieve their stated mission.
Since the inception of the Mighty Men of Faith there have been changes in the group members. Malvin Scott the primary Lead singer transitioned from time to eternity in January 2013. At that time Malvin had become a faithful Church attendee and active member in the Church. He had recognized with full understanding how God had blessed his life; that God had his back no matter what. To reflect that fact he wrote the most recent release of the Mighty Men of Faith “God’s Got My Back”. Shortly thereafter William “Pedie” Carswell decided to take another path in his Christian music journey. Charles Johnson after Malvin’s transition joined the Group. It is amazing how God works. In a local play about the group Onyx Charles played the roll of Malvin. On hearing his voice and seeing that he had primarily been a Gospel singer he was invited to join the group. Rev. Harris’s son Rev. Richard Hayes, who sang with the group on occasions, became a full time member of the group to take the place of William Carswell.
The faith of the Mighty Men is strong. They believe without reservation that God will remove any storm or obstacle to their music ministry. The Mighty Men often say, “ God is with those who are with him”. The Mighty Men of Faith are truly ambassadors for God. God is doing a good work with them and they vow to do God’s will. They believe because of their faith that God has a blessing with their name on it and through his blessings others will be blessed.
