New Centricity band For All Seasons is my top new band from this past year and I have greatly enjoyed their debut singles "Higher" and "No Other" in connection with their album, Clarity. The California-based band is comprised of Emily Hamilton (lead vocals, guitars, keys), Johnny Hamilton (drums), Jeff Luckey (guitars, keys, vocals) and Randy Charlson (bass, guitars).

Emily Hamilton has pure and strong vocals that remind me of Christy Nockels and Plumb. I recently named her one of my top 10 female vocalists of the past year. I had the chance to interview Emily about "Bigger Than."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

At the end of 2015, out of nowhere I started to struggle with anxiety. I'm the oldest of three daughters and growing up I was super involved and I know that slowly but surely I started to take pride in that. It became part of my identity that I had it all together which turned it into control issues. None of that really came to my attention until 2015, because as the band continued to grow, there was a lot of inconsistency. My desire to have control was impossible, because I never knew what would happen next. It all came to a head when I woke up in the middle of the night and was having a major panic attack. I had never experienced it before and told my husband we needed to go to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack.  We ended up going and the doctors told me I was fine and said I was under a lot of stress. That entered me into a season of depression. It seemed that everything was okay until I didn't know where something was coming from. I couldn't articulate what was going on, and this song came out of that season. About two months after that panic attack, a friend of ours started playing what became the chorus of this song. I remember when I heard the song my heart leapt out of my chest because I knew this was the song I needed to sing. Sometimes I'll feel like I've written songs for other people to sing, and other times I have songs that are for me, and that's this song. I think people connect with it because it is so personal. It is one of those songs where when I go onstage, I was still struggling with this issue, I know that these are the truths I need to sing and taking that next step to proclaim these lyrics are what I know are true about God. His character and His presence is the only way I can get through this. God began to unpack for me that all of my anxiety and stress was coming from a control issue. It was me having a picture of what my life should be and as soon as something didn't go that way, internally I would feel stressed. I had been hiding that by controlling things, but I had to decide that I needed to trust God with my life.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 55:22 (NIV): "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken."

Isaiah 26:3 (NLV): "You will keep the man in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You, because he trusts in You."

Matthew 6:31-34 (VOICE): "So do not consume yourselves with questions: What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? Outsiders make themselves frantic over such questions; they don't realize that your heavenly Father knows exactly what you need.  Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be given to you too. So do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself, living faithfully is a large enough task for today."

Hebrews 4:15-16 (NKJV): "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV): "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."

What is the takeaway message?

I would get really anxious and I remember in that season that I would listen to Steffany Gretzinger's first album and it would speak to me all these truths about who God is and that He is with me, combatting my fear of failure and my fear of letting people down. The song says that "You are bigger than all my dreams." We remember to approach God about our needs and about bad things that happen to us sometimes, but we need to also approach Him about our plans and desires. God is bigger than those things. I need to trust that what God has planned is greater than what I have planned. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We can't even fathom what He has planned for us. I have to trust God. When my life's perfect cookie cutter plans don't turn out like I thought, I need to trust that God is good and His dreams for me are bigger than my dreams for myself. The song also says that "whatever will come my way through each day I will say, I will trust You." Logically that doesn't always connect in my brain but the act of obedience and discipline to verbally say to God "I trust You" goes so far. The verses are about the truths about God that we wanted to put into people's hearts, minds and mouths. We wanted to move past thinking about how hard things can be to choosing to fill my mind with truths about God. We can count on God and His character and know that He keeps His promises. Take an active step and say, "God, I trust You." God hasn't forgotten about you. He is with us.

Lyrics:
You are able to provide
You are faithful in perfect time
Your goodness overwhelms
I am held

Through the fire, You're my shield
Your protection never fails
No power can separate
I am safe

You are bigger than all my fears
God of love, God my love
You are bigger than all my dreams
God my hope, God my peace
Whatever will come my way
Through each day, I will say
God I trust You, I trust You

You're the treasure I desire
I surrender my whole life
For Your glory, my great reward
I am Yours, use me
Lord

You are bigger than all my fears
God of love, God my love
You are bigger than all my dreams
God my hope, God my peace
Whatever will come my way
Through each day, I will say
God I trust You, I trust You

You are the God who always sees us
Even in bare and desperate seasons
No matter what the circumstance
You are the Rock on which I stand
You are the God who always sees us
Even in bare and desperate seasons
No matter what the circumstance
You are the Rock on which I stand

You are bigger than all my fears
God of love, God my love
You are bigger than all my dreams
God my hope, God my peace
Whatever will come my way
Through each day, I will say
God I trust You, I trust You

You are bigger than all my fears
God of love, God my love
You are bigger than all my dreams
God my hope, God my peace
Whatever will come my way
Through each day, I will say
God I trust You, I trust You

Closing Thoughts

This song is very convicting and comforting for me. It reminds us to think about whether we are spending too much time thinking about our circumstances and what we can do to improve them, or are we connecting with God's heart for us, which is "do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself, living faithfully is a large enough task for today" (Matt. 6:34).

Philippians 4 says, "Do not be anxious about anything...the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." I love how Emily took a moment of personal anxiety and panic that she wasn't being all that she is called to be as a follower of Jesus, and turned it into a prayer of surrender to God that we can all sing and say "yes and Amen" to.  The enemy uses fear, anxiety, and worry to prevent us from living in faith.

Emily also needed to step into walking by faith and not by sight and trusting in the unseen promises of God. Living in fear, worry and anxiety is not God's plan for us as His children. His Word tells us, "do not fear," "do not worry," and "cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" and has many other reminders about how God wants to take our thoughts captive and trust in Him and His plans for us.

Over the years, I've struggled with perfectionism and people pleasing. This song really opens up my eyes to the truth that those feelings are actually selfish and not God-honoring. My personal devotional prayer this year has been to have more faith. This song is my heart's cry and anthem to sing daily in praise to the Lord, regardless of my circumstances, doubts or worry, by singing these words to Him:  "You are bigger than all my fears, God of love, God my love, You are bigger than all my dreams, God my hope, God my peace, Whatever will come my way, Through each day, I will say, God I trust You, I trust You!" Amen to that!
