BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#46 - "The Lost Get Found" by Britt Nicole
With a new album in stores, Britt Nicole speaks to NRT's Kevin Davis about her new hit single, and title track, "The Lost Get Found."

"The Lost Get Found" is simply about being who we are called to be as Christians, and through that, seeing the lost get found. I believe that when we become who we are called to be, the lost will come to know God. They will see that God is real, and that His love is greater than any problem, any fear, any sickness."
--Britt Nicole

Britt Nicole released her debut album, Say It, on Sparrow Records in 2007, which spawned the hits "You," "Set the World On Fire" and "Believe." Her new single, "The Lost Get Found," is the title track on her new album, available now.

I got the opportunity to speak with Britt about her latest single. You can listen to our entire conversation here.

Please tell me about writing the song "The Lost Get Found"?

I have been a youth leader for about 4 years at a church in Franklin, TN. I love it. Itís a big part of my life and my heart. The kids have blessed me and ministered to me more than Iíve ministered to them. We were attending a conference at a place called The Ramp in Alabama. There were about 2,000 kids in attendance and my brother is actually the worship leader. We go there often as a youth group and worship God together, see dramas and listen to preachers.

At the end of the weekend, I was worn out and ready for God to pour something into me. I donít remember having a specific encounter during the conference where God came and said something to me, but during the 3-hour drive back to Tennessee, God was challenging me to reach out and talk to people and tell them that God loves them. There were moments when I did and moments when I didnít. So I wrote "The Lost Get Found" based on that.

Is there a personal story about the message of that song?

The song is really based on an event that came a week later after that conference. I was at the mall and there was a lady at the register that God was challenging me to talk to. I kind of stood there and thought too much. When the Holy Spirit tells you to move, you need to act and not delay. The lady walked away and I was mad at myself for not acting on God's urge to talk to that lady. I wondered what was it that God wanted me to tell that lady? I was selfish and was thinking of myself and I was disappointed in myself. A couple of days later, I was writing songs with Ben Glover and I told his wife about that situation in the mall. She told me that God was working on her in the same way and she is trying to be a light to others that she knows.

While writing the song, Ben and I had trouble coming up with anything for at least an hour, so we prayed together and Ben looked up and said "the lost get found." I know that was it. Jesus tells us that he'll leave the 99 righteous to find that 1 lost person. "The Lost Get Found" is about our need to be bold and listen to the Holy Spirit.

Do you have a life verse or any verses you used in writing the song?

1 Chronicles 28:20 reminds me of God's daily calling on my life.

David also said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.

God gave me that verse when I was 17 years old and called me into ministry. Iíve stood upon that verse and it has really encouraged me these past 8 years. It also ties into the message of The Lost Get Found.

I also feel that Matthew 5:15-16 ties in to the message of the song.

What's the takeaway message for listeners regarding the song?

There is a line in the song that says so when you get the chance, are you gonna take it?. This song is meant to encourage believers to take that chance and not be afraid to speak to non-believers. I want people to be encouraged to have the courage to speak out in faith and be a light.

Here are the lyrics:

Hello my friend
I remember when you were
So alive with your wide eyes
Then the light that you had in your heart was stolen
Now you say that it ain't worth stayin'
You wanna run but you're hesitatin'
I'm talkin' to me

Don't let your lights go down
Don't let your fire burn out
'Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe
Why don't you rise up now?
Don't be afraid to stand out
That's how the lost get found
The lost get found

So when you get the chance
Are you gonna take it?
There's a really big world at your fingertips
And you know you have the chance to change it
There's a girl on the streets, she's cryin'
There's a man whose faith is dyin'
Love is calling you

Don't let your lights go down
Don't let your fire burn out
'Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe
Why don't you rise up now?
Don't be afraid to stand out
That's how the lost get found
The lost get found

Why do we go with the flow
Or take an easier road?
Why are we playin' it safe?
Love came to show us the way
Love is a chance we should take
I'm movin' out of the way

Don't let your lights go down
Don't let your fire burn out
'Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe
(Stand out)
Don't let your lights go down
Don't let your fire burn out
(Stand out)
'Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe
Why don't you rise up now?
Don't be afraid to stand out
That's how the lost get found
The lost get found

So when you get the chance
Are you gonna take it?
There's a really big world at your fingertips
And you know you have the chance to change it

I have to admit that this is one of my most played songs of the year. It has a catchy upbeat tempo and has a very convicting message. In essence, it is like a sequel to Brittís hit song "Set The World On Fire" which challenges listeners to live in the Holy Spirit with the lyrics "Lord with You thereís nothing I cannot do. "The Lost Get Found" is a wonderful song of encouragement to live as a light and know that in Christ we can do anything. God will never fail us or forsake us until the work of the Lord is finished. So, as Britt asks in the song: "when you get the chance, are you gonna take it?"
