Biblical truths buoyed up by melodies that will stay in your head and heart characterize several of the songs I've come to already cherish from Integrity Music newcomer Corey Voss. He has been involved in writing and singing several standout songs, including Selah's "I Got Saved," "Praise the King," "How Great" and "Nothing but the Blood." His songs have blessed me in my time of worship.

His Integrity debut project Songs of Heaven and Earth Vol. 1 recently released. It includes the worshipful song "God Who Moves the Mountains," also covered by Jaci Velasquez, and "As It Is In Heaven," which also appears on the new Alisa Turner album. I had the chance to speak with Corey Voss about his song "Canyons."

Please tell me the personal story behind the song.

I'm super excited about this song. It was written a couple of years ago with a dear friend, Krissy Nordhoff. It was one of those writing sessions where we got together and I was sitting at the piano and she was on the other side of the room, and we just started worshipping. The first lyric of the song came out of a moment of worship, which is really cool. The song starts "take me higher than the angels fly." We looked at each other after she sang out that line, and we knew we had something with this song and kept writing. 

The Scripture that we were focused on is Ephesians 3:19. That passage talks about understanding the love of Christ; how high and how wide and how deep it is. We took each of those 3 words, and wrote 3 verses about how high, how wide and how deep God's love is for us: "Take me higher than the angels fly, take me wider than the atmosphere, and take me deeper than the ocean floor."

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song? 

Romans 8:35 (VOICE): "So who can separate us? What can come between us and the love of God's Anointed? Can troubles, hardships, persecution, hunger, poverty, danger, or even death? The answer is, absolutely nothing."

Psalm 42:7-8 (NKJV): "Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me. The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me--A prayer to the God of my life."

Psalm 68:18 (NKJV): "You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men, Even from the rebellious, That the Lord God might dwell there."

Ephesians 4:8 (NKJV): "Therefore He says: 'When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.'"

Ephesians 3:17-19 (NIV): "And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

Isaiah 40:31 (VOICE): "But those who trust in the Eternal One will regain their strength. They will soar on wings as eagles. They will run--never winded, never weary. They will walk--never tired; never faint."

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV): "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

What is the takeaway message?

We wanted to keep the theme of the different dimensions and descriptions of the love of God. We got to the chorus, and Krissy came up with the idea of canyons. How true is it for so many of us that our hearts can be like canyons? It's God's love that will fill that canyon and the void that is inside of us. We wanted to communicate that there really is no limit to God's love when our hearts are open before Him and we are earnest before Him. There's no limit to His love. It was kind of cool to take that Scripture, and it was one of those songwriting sessions where it felt like we were tapping into a moment with the Holy Spirit. Sometimes you are just writing and you pray and do your best, and with this song, my heart was stirred.

For sure, with these songs I want people to experience God's presence. That's always been my prayer in my heart with songwriting, is that I want people to encounter Him and that they would grow closer in their relationship with God. Maybe it's just one lyric or melody that pulls them in. That was the vision for this project. 

I'm also an avid hiker. These past couple of years in writing these songs, I always feel closer to God when I'm outside. That's a big theme of this album, incorporating pictures of creation in worship. I hope these lyrics and melodies draw listeners in and create pictures in your mind's eye of who God is to you.

I've been worshipping with this album since it released in my personal time of praise and adoration with the Lord. Every thought and lyric in this song and this album is rooted in Scripture, which I admire. In singing this song, you can reflect on the promise of Psalm 68:18: "You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men, even from the rebellious that the Lord God might dwell there," and the fulfillment in Ephesians 4:8: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive and gave gifts to men." 

When we acknowledge "take me higher, Lord," our burdens are removed. I can't get enough of the beautifully poetic and powerful expressions of faith in this song. What's awesome about this inspiring song of praise is that it provides encouragement and personal motivation to fight the good fight of faith and finish the race of life strong. God knows what we need, and He loves and cares for each of us deeply. This song reminds me that we need to have the type of faith that Jesus describes in the Bible: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Being a Christian means that you walk by faith, not by sight.
 
This song celebrates the truth from Ephesians and Romans about grasping "how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ." Allow the fullness of Christ's love to indwell in your heart and proclaim the truth of this song. This great new worship song really sets me in the proper mindset to praise God for loving me so much that He gave His life away for all that was lost. "Canyons" is a song, a prayer and a call for revival in our hearts. I am challenged to believe these words when I sing along and proclaim with all of my heart: "There is no limit to Your endless love, just when I doubt it, there is so much more. A rushing waterfall that overflows, It's filling canyons in my soul." Amen to that!
