Always Remain is the new live worship album from North Central University Worship Live, and is led by one of Christian music's most prolific and beloved worship leaders, Jeff Deyo. Deyo is best known for being the original lead singer of SonicFlood. His versions of songs have blessed worshipers for twenty years, including cornerstones like "In the Secret (I Want to Know You)," "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" and "More Love, More Power."

The program at North Central University is geared towards equipping and preparing worship leaders, or as they are called there, "psalmists for the next generation." Larry Bach, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, shared, "Having good musical training and also good theological training makes for good psalmists." I had the chance to speak with Jeff Deyo about "Always Remain."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This is a song that was written and started by four of us. We have these events where we get together every Friday called creative Fridays. It's a time when anyone who wants to gather to write songs is invited. This past fall in preparation for this album we got together, and one of the students, Taylor Marshall, brought this idea for the song to begin with. He had come with the idea for the verse, and it was mellow and cool. Another guy Sam Rodriguez had a chorus that he was working on, and they started putting those together. I walked in the room and realized they had the potential for something cool.

We started changing lyrics and tweaking the melodies. I teach a songwriting class at our school, and we say to lift the chorus melodically. I've always wanted to have a chorus drop down, which this song does. One of the highlights of this song is when the first bridge starts, which is taken from 1st John 4:19: we love Him because He first loved us. One definition of worship is that it is a response to a revelation. I can't worship a God I don't know. In the midst of the chaos, God found me, and I found Him, and He loves me, and I love Him.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

1 John 4:18-19 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."

Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV): Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 24:32-35 (NIV): "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."

Revelation 21:4-5 (NKJV): And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

What is the takeaway message?

Being at a university, and it is true anywhere, these students are in the middle of some of the biggest life changes they will ever face: getting ready for careers, getting married. It can be scary. The world is going crazy politically, and there is an increase in the natural desire to fear what the future holds, especially for students.

The idea of the song is that God is the one thing we can stand upon, and He will always remain. That's the theme of the song. The chorus talks about how even when I stumble and fall, You carry me, even when the walls come crashing in, You will always remain. We need to understand that God is the One who delivers us in the midst of those things. I talk with students about this topic, and when they are upset about the future, I acknowledge that things are challenging, but ask them to imagine the worst case scenario. Today if the earth cracks in half, and I don't know the physics, but I think we would all die if that happened, it's amazing to think that we serve a God who can put the earth back together and give us our lives back. It puts everything in perspective.

We all have bad days, and when everything seems to be going wrong, I know that I can stand on the fact that God will always remain. The second bridge of the song echoes that if the mountains give way and the seas start to rage, and if my heart wants to fail, He will always remain. The Bible tells us that He will be faithful even if we are not faithful. It is incredible to think about that. My ears need to hear my mouth say that He always remains. God doesn't need to hear that, because He knows. I know I need to hear myself say that and have it connect to my heart that even if it all falls apart, I can rest and be at peace.

Lyrics:
I've found a love I know
I'll sing of Your faithfulness
I've found a well that flows from You
From You

I've found a hope within
Your life is alive in me
I'll rest in the peace that flows from You
From You

Even when I fall You carry me
Even when I stumble You are there
Even when the walls come crashing in
You will always remain, You will always remain
You will always remain

I've found a love I know
I'll sing of Your faithfulness
And I've found a well that flows from You
From You

Even when I fall You carry me
Even when I stumble You are there
Even when the walls come crashing in
You will always remain, You will always remain
You will always remain, You will always remain!

I found You, 'cause You found me
I love You, 'cause You loved me
I found You, 'cause You loved me first
I found You, 'cause You found me
I love You, 'cause You loved me
I found You, 'cause You loved me first

I found You, 'cause You found me
I love You, 'cause You loved me
I found You, 'cause You loved me first
I found You, 'cause You found me
I love You, 'cause You loved me
I found You, 'cause You loved me first!

Even if the mountains give way (hallelujah, hallelujah)
Even if the sea start to rage (hallelujah, hallelujah)
Even if my heart wants to fail (hallelujah, hallelujah)
You will always remain, You will always remain!
Even if the mountains give way (hallelujah, hallelujah)
Even if the sea start to rage (hallelujah, hallelujah)
Even if my heart wants to fail (hallelujah, hallelujah)
You will always remain, You will always remain
You will always remain, You will always remain
You will always remain, You will always remain!

As we look at the fallen world around us, we all need to lift our eyes up to God and put all of our faith and hope in Him. For the saved In Christ, know that one day "God will wipe away every tear, there will be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying." Christians are brand new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives us new life, and we are not the same anymore. We are new creations, and we can live in freedom from fear and regrets. As believers, we all need to live for Heaven and not get depressed or angry about our fallen world. Pain and suffering point us to God and how much we need Him.

I really connect to the message of the song personally. We don't know the day or the hour that Jesus will return, but we do know that God is consistent and keeps His Word. He tells us that one day He will make a new Heaven and a new earth. Nothing on earth is permanent, including our lives. Everything is temporary, and when all is said and done, Jesus will remain. One day we'll stand face to face with God. This song reminds me to put all of my hope and trust in Jesus, and it's a great worship anthem.

There are several truths we can cling to as believers in this song: being found by God, in the state we are in, and recognizing that we are never too far from His love or His reach. God is omnipresent and always with us. The song also sings about not being afraid of the storm and trusting in God and confessing to Him and others when you fail or have struggles. Lay those at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from that burden. I love singing this song of faith to Jesus and proclaiming, "Even when I fall You carry me, even when I stumble You are there, even when the walls come crashing in, You will always remain." Amen to that!
