#28 - "Hope Now" by Addison Road
Jenny Simmons, lead singer for new group Addison Road, speaks with NRT's Kevin Davis about their powerful single, "Hope Now."

Iíve really enjoyed Addison Roadís self-titled debut album on INO Records since last year. One of the most worshipful songs on the album is "Hope Now," and it is the current single. I find the message especially encouraging, and I love the line "Your love sets me free." I had the great privilege to speak with Jenny Simmons from the group, and this is what she shared with me about the song.

"For me, 'Hope Now' has meant a lot in the last 6 months. My life has been changing drastically. The words penetrate deeply inside when I sing it, and when my life feels chaotic and out of control, I know that God holds our life in the palm of His hands. When we wonder whatís happening, God stands firm and Heís strong in those moments. I donít have it all figured out, but I know God does!

I believe that everything rides on hope now. I can say with 100 percent certainty that everything rides on my faith, and on my hope.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby. When I found out I was pregnant I talked with my parents and we were crying because they are moving to New Mexico. My sister, who is my best friend, is moving to Hawaii three weeks before my baby is due in April. Iím on tour, I'm pregnant, my family is moving away from me and every time I sing this song live, I tell that story and relate to the audience the hope I have in God in the midst of my craziness.

My husband and I are in Addison Road together, and Natalie Grant has advised me on how to balance being a mother and singer on the road. She told me to speak the truth of God on stage and that God doesnít call us to do things that contradict each other, which is very encouraging for me as I balance motherhood and the ministry of my band. A man came up to me after a show and told me that he has four kids, whose mother had died. They sing 'Hope Now' everyday and came to the show just to hear me sing that song. I donít even know what to say to people when that happens, but those kinds of stories really encourage me and the band."

Some scriptures Jenny thinks about when she sings this song are Psalm 139:1-12:

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me inóbehind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Also, Isaiah 43:1-4:

But now, this is what the LORD saysó he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ďFear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life.

"Hope Now," like many songs, is the result of a turbulent period in the bandís history. "A couple of years ago, we werenít getting along very well," Ryan Gregg of Addison Road explains, "and it was at the point of deciding 'Are we going to keep doing this? Are we going to be able to get along, make a living or what?' We made a trip to Nashville to meet with this manager, and he caught on right away. He said, 'Youíre a great band with great songs, but youíre missing the hope here. Thereís too much negativity in what youíre singing about, and Christian music is about giving people hope. Everything rides on hope now.'"

Needless to say, for Addison Road, the trip home was rough, but later that night, in his room, Ryan Gregg began to wrestle with what the manager said.

"I couldnít get that line out of my head, 'Everything rides on hope now.' I grabbed a guitar and the chorus came immediately."

Lyrically, and interpersonally, the song represents a turning point for the bandÖand is an important and powerful truth for all who hear.

Here are the lyrics to "Hope Now":

If everything comes down to love,
Then just what am I afraid of?
When I call out Your name,
Something inside awakes in my soul.
How quickly I forget I'm Yours.

I'm not my own.
I've been carried by You,
All my life.

Everything rides on hope now,
Everything rides on faith somehow.
When the world has broken me down,
Your love sets me free.

When my life is like a storm,
Rising waters all I want is the shore,
You say I'll be ok and,
Make it through the rain.
You are my shelter from the storm.

Everything rides on hope now,
Everything rides on faith somehow.
When the world has broken me down,
Your love sets me free.
You've become my hearts desire.
I will sing Your praises higher,
Cause Your love sets me free
Your love sets me free
Your love sets me free.

This song has been a very powerful vertical expression of faith for me. The concept of everything riding on hope and faith and Godís Love sets me free is cause for praise and worship of our great God and Savior. Take comfort in any situation you are facing that God knows you and loves you deeply. He has carried us all of our lives and will continue to be our hope.
