BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#736 - "Your Love Is Beautiful" by Jon Bauer
Jon Bauer talks about what it truly looks like to have the Light of the World living in us.

The Light In Us is the highly anticipated seventh studio recording from Canada native, JUNO® Award-nominated and multi Covenant Award-winning worship artist Jon Bauer. He is a singer-songwriter in the style of John Waller, Matthew West and Josh Wilson. The new album features ten songs, all co-penned by Bauer.

The Light In Us is a project written to tell the story of a season of redemption and healing in Jon Bauer's personal life, healing achieved both through the faithfulness of God and that faithfulness expressed through the community around Jon. Some album highlights include the worshipful, upbeat opener "Your Love Is Beautiful" and the pop-driven plea to hear His voice on "Say Something." I had the chance to speak with Jon about "Your Love is Beautiful."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

Sometimes it is so easy to get into the routines of daily life and not even think about it, because that's how we've always done them. I believe that life with Jesus is anything but routine, because we have the Creator of the universe, the Author of love, and the Light of the world who lives inside of us. We should expect every day to be an adventure, something new and something fresh, because the Lord is always at work. Even when we don't see it, He's there and at work.

When I grew up, I loved to read the "choose your own adventure" books. I loved those books and how the story ended up differently if you chose a different outcome. I don't know if it was from those books or the Spirit whispering to my heart, but from a young age I would wake up and pray a simple prayer: "Jesus, today as I walk with You and rest in Your love, would You give me wisdom to make the choices that would bring a smile to Your face, even in the times I don't feel like it."

Today may I live in freedom, and may my life shout out "Your love is beautiful." That was the prayer of my heart from a young age. We have been praying for our children, that they make the choice to live each day in God's love and bring a smile to His face. Joy and love are going to be a choice, just like Jesus made the choice to die on the Cross for us.  As He was on the Cross, He could have chosen to take Himself off. He didn't. He made the choice to stay and die and pay the greatest price for us.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 118:24 (NKJV): "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it."

Psalm 59:16-17 (The Voice): "But me? I will sing of Your strength. I will awake with the sun to sing of Your loving mercy Because in my most troubled hour, You defended me. You were my shelter. I will lift my voice to sing Your praise, O my Strength--for You came to my defense. O God, You have shown me Your loving mercy."

Psalm 33:3 (The Voice): "Sing to Him a new song; play each the best way you can, and don't be afraid to be bold with your joyful feelings."

Psalm 30:11-12 (The Voice): "You did it: You turned my deepest pains into joyful dancing; You stripped off my dark clothing and covered me with joyful light. You have restored my honor. My heart is ready to explode, erupt in new songs! It's impossible to keep quiet! Eternal One, my God, my Life-Giver, I will thank You forever."

Romans 8:28 (NIV): "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Romans 8:37-39 (NIV): "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Galatians 5:1 (NIV): "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

1 John 1:7 (NIV): "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."

2nd Corinthians 5:21 (NIV): "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."

Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV): Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

What is the takeaway message?

In order to share in the love and joy of Jesus, we're going to need to die to ourselves in certain situations. The world is telling us one thing. Scripture is telling us something else. In the face of what the world is telling us, we need to make the choice to shout out "Your love is beautiful" and live in that way. The greatest takeaway from the song is to pray and ask the Lord to give us wisdom as we choose our own adventures with Him. As we walk with Jesus each day, ask Him to help you live your life to the fullest and live in freedom and raise the banner of God's love. That's the heartbeat behind the song.

Life with Jesus is a journey. The Lord never promised it would be easy, but worth it if we trust in Him. This album shares a healing journey I have been on the last couple of years as I have leaned on the faithfulness of God, even when I have not felt Him near. In His time--not my own--He has brought complete healing and has used the trials of this life as a testament to His greatness. My prayer is that these songs would draw others who are walking through a valley to press in even closer to Jesus.

Lyrics:
You broke the chains that were secured around my heart
And tore down every wall
And it's like gravity had pulled my world apart
But You would break my fall

I can see
The sun is the rising
On the horizon
From the sky
Down to the ocean
Love is in motion

We will shout
Your love is beautiful
Your love is beautiful
We cry out
Your love is beautiful
Your love is beautiful
It's beautiful

And I can see that it is shining all around
Beaming through the clouds
So much beauty as it filters to the ground
And I can feel it now

Who You are
Is such a mystery
So captivating
'Cuz my heart
It's lighting up quick
Like it's a matchstick

All around the world
All around the world
Your love is beautiful

The phrase "sing a new song" is found a few times in the Psalms, and I love the rest of the translation of Psalm 33:3b: "play each the best way you can, and don't be afraid to be bold with your joyful feelings" (The Voice). That type of biblical exhortation is exactly what Jon is doing with this wonderful new song of praise and joy about the love of God, which he is describing as beautiful in the song. As Christians, we all have a reason to reflect on God's Holy and Perfect sacrifice of His Son Jesus. He died for us, so that in Him we might know God's righteousness.

We can't earn grace, and we can't do anything to gain life other than accept Jesus. Jesus loves us so much He came down and took our punishment so that we can be with Him forever. He wants to give us life and never let us go. What a reason to have comfort in our Savior and know that He's by our side. The timeless passage, Romans 8:28-29, has application for us today as we live in uncertain times and when we question whether God can really love us after all of our mistakes. We need to serve God and trust Him because of who He is, not what He does for us. God doesn't promise to spare us from pain, but we need to trust Him.

The declaration: "Who You are is such a mystery, so captivating" celebrates that "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever" and that God takes broken things and makes them beautiful. I'm moved by the passion behind the lyrics speaking of how we think we are never good enough, yet Jesus saw something beautiful in us worth dying for. That's cause to celebrate and lift our voices in joy, remembering that "all around the world, Your love is beautiful." Amen to that!
