BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#10 - "The More" by Downhere
NRT columnist Kevin Davis continues his devotional series focusing on one of his favorite songs by Downhere.

"The More" by Downhere is one of my favorite songs by my favorite band. I had a hard time picking which song to focus on as I love every song by Downhere, especially "A Better Way" which is one of my all-time favorite songs about the Love of Jesus, along with "Great Are You" and "Starspin," all of which I highly recommend. My most played song by Downhere is "The More" from Wide-Eyed And Mystified and it is based on a few verses in 2nd Peter.

2 Peter 1:5-8 (NLT)
In view of all this, make every effort to respond to Godís promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Peter has some unbelievably great advice for all of us as Christians trying to walk with Jesus and follow Godís will daily. For me, the timing of this advice is perfect as Iím working on developing my spiritual disciplines and trying to be learn how to be more like Jesus. The only way is to rely on God as my foundation and only build with His spiritual gifts of moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection and love.

Marc Martel from Downhere says: "I believe faith is like a muscle. The more you use what little of it you may have, the more it grows in strength. It also goes to say that the opposite is trueóthe less you exercise it, the more it wanes. I look back on my childhood and see a boy with every reason to believe God for all that He says He is. And I did. I look at myself now, and see a man with even more reasons to believe, but also with more reasons to doubt. Being stronger physically, emotionally, and able to take care of myself, it now becomes much more tempting to believe that I am self-sufficient A child believes easily, and I sometimes find myself wishing for that frame of mind. But knowing what I know now about my God, in light of what I know about my world, it makes His love seem all the more amazing. It seems like as my faith grows, His love also grows...in my eyes anyway. So I will continue to keep on exercising my faith with every moment, every minute, but in a more wonderfully complex way. And who knows? Maybe by the time Iím elderly I will have, by the grace of God, regained that innocent, simple childlike faith I once had. I can only hope."

"The More" Lyrics
I met You like a little child
Wide-eyed and mystified
That You could love even me
So Iím here to testify
That itís been an amazing ride with You
And I have never walked alone
Wanna give You every moment, every minute
Itís takes a lifetime to know You, to know You

And the more You show me, the more You grow me
The more Your glory becomes all there is
And the more I know You, the more I need You
The more I love You, the more You become to me

Fast-forward to the golden years
A smaller pride and a bigger fear
But still, no way are we done yet
I pray that You would keep me mystified,
In every way that I will still abide in You
Till You come to take me home
Wanna give You every moment, every minute
And take a lifetime to know You, to know You

Wanna give You every moment, every minute
Iíll take a lifetime to know You
Hold me Lord, keep me
Draw me closer every moment of my life

This is such a great anthem of faith. Downhere really brings to life the words of the Bible in stirring me to be a closer follower of Jesus Ďuntil He comes to take me homeí. We all have a calling to sanctification and Ďthe more we know Jesus, love Him and need Him, the more Heíll grow us and become part of usí. What a great promise and comfort as we struggle with daily distractions and what a great hope it is to know the love of Jesus.
